zmud doesn't even attempt to make the connection, it just immediately fails. tested on multiple proxies that i verified were working with a web browser.

well, i thought it worked for me in the past anyways....

err...i'm beginning to think it doesn't work because it's not possible to use a http proxy this way???

You cannot play MUDs via a HTTP proxy. MUDs use the Telnet Protocol and this doesn't work via HTTP proxies. You need a proxy server that supports the SOCKS proxy protocol, or you need a specific telnet proxy.

I think there are techniques available to ... Socksify(?) HTTP proxies for such things. I do remember looking at such solutions waay back when I was still at university and using HTTP proxy was the only way to get around security to connect to my MUD.

A couple of programs that come to mind which may help you with this are HTTP-Tunnel and Socksify (The names might be wrong.. it's been a long time).

Keep in mind that if you are at a school or business and you try to use software like this to telnet though an HTTP proxy, you might be violating their network usage terms. Typically schools put up HTTP proxies *specifically* to prevent MUDding or Telnet connections. So before you try to circumvent this proxy server, make sure you understand the rules of use for your network. I'd hate to see someone fired or suspended for using zMUD when they shouldn't.

hehehe. i've mudded so many times at school. but unfortunately you're not allowed to install -anything- while at school, else you get kicked off the network. which kinda sucks. so i was stuck with a java applet, the best i could do :(
