zmud junked all my settings |
well, this is lovely, when openning another char, zmud froze, it seems to happen a lot, but anyways, this time it locked up completely, and ended up locking up my computer, no choice but to restart.
now, one of my chars, the one with all of my scripts, triggers, etc, his settings file is empy, including my backup, go figure. In addition, i get no mud output to his screen, or any output i should say, even from entering commands. I've tried restarting, and yes, the 'show mud output' option thingy is checked.
i havent a clue what to do, but this is bad bad news if both that settings file and the backup are gone for good. |

That sounds very unfortunate and much like your zMUD and something else in Windows may be damaged, not to mention the loss of your settings. This is why I backup my scripts, settings, maps, etc like a paranoid conspiracy theorist. I recommend you should invest in a USB flash drive. You might want to reformat your PC and start over, too. ;)

Zmud always created a backup file automatically for me.
i.e.
Materiamagica_def.mud
Materiamagica_def_bak.mud
Did you look to see if your backup is still there? |

He mentioned the backup already, Ed. I'm guessing that he has the autosave feature on, and if so then he doesn't have any more backups unless he physically copied the file to a renamed one. ZMud tends to get the saves in even if it crashes.
I forget if Zugg encrypts .MUD files or if they are in plain text. If they are binary/encrypted then you're basically out of luck at this point because it sounds like your .MUD file is corrupted to the point of unretrievability and without backups you are just going to have to start over.
However, given that it's probably corrupted chances are the data is still there and just unreadable. I would try to export to text the whole file and using the Migration Guide on that. If export produces actual settings in the text file, the Migration Guide will allow you to fix your .MUD file (well, not really, since I think you are simply moving the settings to a new, blank file rather than back into the old one).
If exporting doesn't work, you can try using Notepad to see if you can copy and paste anything worth saving. If you have to do this, though, it's probably just as easy to start over. |
