Unread Topic |
Im not sure if this is just me or not, but for the last 2-3 days, messages i have read do not always remember my having read them.
I first noticed it happening with posts I myself made, but it happens on others as well.
I am using Mozilla. |

Are you logged in (assuming you can view the forums without doing so)? Usually forum software doesn't do the whole read-unread thing if you aren't logged in. Otherwise, sounds like a bad cookie.

Continually had this problem with Firefox, the only reason I use IE now is to read these forums.

Oh, how odd. This is an issue for me for a freshly installed copy of Firefox or upgraded, it doesn't matter which. Also I can wipe out my settings from Application Data and still have the issue. It's never worked for me. I just figured it was something wrong with Firefox.

Usually this is a problem with a cookie. Sometimes you can get a cookie from emobius.com instead of forums.zuggsoft.com, especially if you registered a long time ago. Check your bookmarks to make sure you are going to the www.zuggsoft.com site and not the emobius.com site. Do a "Log out" at the top of the page and then log back in again. And then go into your cookie file and remove any cookies from emobius.com.
I use Firefox here and have never had any trouble with the Unread markers, so it's not a Firefox problem. |

I'll do this and see what happens over the next few days. Any chance that your cookies get messed up if you swap and change between using IE and FF?

Seems to be a few of those strange web issues going on but i dont think its zuggsoft.com. Its like the images not showing up for me on new posts. I have a feeling its some strange cache conflict between I.E and Firefox as i use both plus i also wrote a program that has a coded browser in it for the mud that i play on. A compendium of sorts. I think it got confused between the 3 you might have the same problem and just need to clear out some cache and cookies.

Ok I'm now using FF, checked for cookies, there is only zuggsoft.com listed and not emobius.com, I'll see how the unread posts go over the next few days using FF only.

So far so good FF is remembering unread posts correctly.

I'm also seeing this happen using IE6.0 sp2.
1. From the www.zuggsoft.com/ site, I click on 'Posts since last visit'.
2. On the http://forums.zuggsoft.com/phpbb/search.php?search_id=newposts page,
I right-click on the first icon with the 'View latest post' tooltip and select 'Open Link in New Window'.
3. I click back to the search page window and repeat step 2 for each unread post.
4. I read each new post and close its topic's window (opened in step 2).
5. I then refresh the search page window, and notice that five of seven topics have the 'No new posts' icon, two topics appear unread.
The two marked as unread should also be marked as read. (I know this because of the time of the post.)
6. I then click on the Zugg Software logo in the upper left corner and return to the home page. It shows
Posts since last visit (7)
View unread posts (2)
7. Finally, when I refresh the home page, I get
Posts since last visit (0)
View unread posts (0)

It seems the cookie(s) is/are getting set (because of #7) but why it doesn't work as expected in the previous steps, I can't guess.
If this were a cookie issue, I would expect that after refreshing the home page window the final time, I'd see:
Posts since last visit (0)
View unread posts (2)
In any event, this isn't a show stopper for me. I can deal with it. |

What I found helps me is loging out at the end of every session.

My impressions are that the message unread / read tracking in this version of phpbb are pretty crude. If I log on to the forums and don't read all the messages and leave my session idle for a bit (whereupon I expect it times out), at that point all messages from before I was last active get marked as read, even if I haven't read them.
The next (unreleased apart from as CVS) release of phpbb has 'database tracking' of read / unread topics. However I've not tested it and don't know exactly how it works. |
