Access violation error using updated MDAC (KB911562)

After installing this

Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 (KB911562)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-014.mspx

now whenever the mapper is started it gives an access violation error, and mapper doesn't start. The rest of the client seems to function as "normal" but if I try to quit/close zmud I repeatedly get

Code:
"Access violation error at address 007FEOFA in module zmud.exe. Read of address FFFFFFFF."

Basically at this point there is no way to shutdown the system. If I try shutdown there is a message something like

Code:
COM connection still open/active ....

and shutdown aborts. If I use CTRL-ALT-DEL to force close of Zmud system hangs.

I'm 99% sure that the update is the source of the problem because after encountering the above problem yesterday, I completely reinstalled my machine today, and having made sure that Zmud works OK, I again installed that security update and thereafter mapper starts throwing a fit again.

As that update seems to close a pretty serious security hole, it would be nice if Zmud could co-exist with it Sad

My system:

Win98SE, Zmud 7.21

Yes this has been reported in MDAC Update Broke zMUD? which has info about how to get back to an earlier version and a statement by Zugg that there is nothing he can do with zMUD in order to make it work it is up to Microsoft to fix their fix.

You may also find Fixing MDAC related problems helpful.

Thanks. I did try searching the forums yesterday, but bizarrely when I try to view the 2nd and subsequent pages of results I get a message saying "no more results"!

Anyway, did MS already try to "fix the fix"? The fix appeared on 11 Apr, and was updated 11 May.

Well it's a good thing that I machine I run zMUD on is used solely for that (I dug out an ancient machine just for it). Hopefully this MDAC update has broken enough apps all over the place that MS is pressured enough to get off their backsides and fix it -properly.
