Ungodly slow client

I'm at a complete loss as to why this is happening. Here's a log that happened in about six seconds of time while I was playing Achaea.

Quote:

You feel yourself compelled to leave the room, beckoned by the allure of a Baalzadeen.
Bridge Street passing through the valley.
Standing still as a statue, a blood steed has fixed its fiery red eyes on some movement in the distance. General
Malifuus, Contagion of the East is here. He wields an elemental staff in his left hand and a shining steel longsword in
his right. He is surrounded by one reflection of himself. Vicar Rameus de Soulis, Nightmare Incarnate is riding on a
chimera. He wields a Shield of Absorption bearing the city arms of Mhaldor in his left hand and an ornate steel rapier
in his right.
You see exits leading east and northwest.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e cexb-
A chaos worm begins burrowing into your belly, depriving you of nutrition.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e cexb-
Dyzanru takes a drink from a black-walnut vial.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e cexb-
A tentacle from Rameus's body lashes out at you, wrapping around your body and holding you firm.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e ceb-
A soulmaster entity lets loose a horrible scream as a dark stream of primal chaos flows from it and into your very
being.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e ceb-
All of Malifuus's reflections wink out of existence!
Sticky strands of webbing spray out from Malifuus to cover you.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e ceb-
A mess of green slime envelops you quickly.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e ceb-
You have recovered balance on all limbs.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e cexb-
Rameus shuffles some cards with the image of the Hanged Man out of his deck.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e cexb-
You feel yourself grow slightly hungrier as the chaos worm feeds.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e cexb-
Rameus rubs his fingers briskly on a Tarot card.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e cexb-
Rameus hurls a tarot card with the image of the Hanged Man on it at you. As it reaches you, a huge mass of rope bursts
out of it, entrapping and hindering you.
Rameus throws a Lovers tarot at you and as it strikes true, you fall hopelessly in love with him.
2168h, 2262m, 12238e cexb-
A hand-sized tick with a human face leaps for your throat.
Your mana and will are drained by the Sycophant.
2168h, 1906m, 12238e cexb-
Dyzanru takes some salve from a vial and rubs it on his head.
2168h, 1906m, 12238e cexb-
Dyzanru stares at you, giving you the evil eye.
Hmmmm. Why must everything be so difficult to figure out?
Dyzanru stares at you, giving you the evil eye.
A prickly stinging overcomes your body, fading away into numbness.
2168h, 1906m, 12238e cexb-
A bubonis entity scuttles over to you and then suddenly leaps up, latching itself to your head.
Pain is something only the weak feel!
2668h, 3568m, 12238e cexb-
Malifuus takes a drink from a black-walnut vial.
2668h, 3568m, 12215e cexb-
You suddenly perceive the vague outline of an aura of rebounding around Dyzanru.
2668h, 3568m, 12215e cexb-
Driven by the scent of fresh blood, the leech leaps and attaches itself to your wound.
2668h, 3568m, 12215e cexb-
Rameus rubs his fingers briskly on a Tarot card.
2668h, 3568m, 12215e cexb-
As Malifuus points his staff at you, a scintilla of bright, burning light shoots out, striking you with focused
elemental power.
2668h, 3568m, 12215e cexb-
Rameus rubs his fingers briskly on a Tarot card.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Vicious laughter fills your ears as bolts of coloured light slam into you from the chaos storm.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Rameus rubs his fingers briskly on a Tarot card.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Rameus rubs his fingers briskly on a Tarot card.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Your body is wracked with pain by the dissonant vibrations.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Rameus shuffles some cards with the image of the Aeon out of his deck.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Rameus rubs his fingers briskly on a Tarot card.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Rameus stands a tarot on his open palm, and blows it lightly at you. Suddenly your movement through the time stream is
slowed.
Rameus flings a tarot card at you which turns an ominous, sickly red before striking you in the head.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Flames lick around you - you are on fire!
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
You feel the slime attacking your physical well-being with its foul presence.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
A circle of vibrating energy appears on the ground, taking your health.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
A series of palpitations of your heart leaves you drained.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Dyzanru's aura of weapons rebounding disappears.
Dyzanru stares at you, giving you the evil eye.
You feel a tightening sensation grow in your lungs.
Dyzanru stares at you, giving you the evil eye.
The idea of eating or drinking is repulsive to you.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Dyzanru takes a long drag off his pipe.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
The chimera's goat head rams into you and knocks you sprawling.
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
<<Dawnstriders>>: Rianara says, "Why am I locked out? :(."

Lord Marshal Dyzanru de Soulis says, "Don't dmg."
2668h, 3568m, 12235e cexb-
Flames erupt over all over your body and begin to consume your flesh.
You have been slain by Rameus.

I recently formatted my harddisk, and have 0 triggers. zMUD seems unable to process any amount of text (be it a 5 line paragraph) without choking up. In this case, I was unable to enter anything at the command line the entire time. Is there some dependency I might have lost in formatting?

Sounds that you would have lot of empty triggers or one trigger that has no pattern or * as a pattern thus generating insane ammount of hits.
Try disabling triggers.
If it helps (CPU % time drops down to zero or so) then you have a trigg that has too wide "hit" area.

As I said, I have absolutely no triggers.

I've ruled out network lag because I've tried the same mud with different clients, hence I turn to the forums for help.

Probably a corrupted setting file. Click the Edit button for your character icon and go to the Files tab. Enter a new name for the Primary Settings filename to let zMUD create a new fresh file and then see if it still happens. Also try deleting your ZMUD.INI file to restore the default preferences.

What you are seeing certainly isn't normal.

Can you export your settings and post them? That would help a great deal. Also if you let us know what MUD you're using we can be of more assistance.

Have you tried the same MUD/char with zMUD on a different PC?

[edit] Take Zugg's advice over mine. Very Happy

I've actually been noticing a lock up when I first connect to my MUD in the morning. It says the:

Connected to host xxx.yyy.zzz

Then freezes for a few seconds.

Then displays the login screen in one big burst.

..... now the strange part, if I reconnect immediately or open another window to the same MUD it doesn't happen again, and for that matter, if I completely exit out of zMUD and go back in - still doesn't happen. But if I leave it for a few hours, then the lag patch happens again when I attempt to make the connection. To me this made me suspect something related to DNS lookups, when the host is cached by windows it isn't an issue, when it's not, then it has a little lock up?

So to ask you orophin - did you have a second MUD window open in the background which maybe you had lost link to (reboot, timeout?) then the auto-reconnect to that thing in the background froze up your normal session you posted above?

I mean maybe they're completely unrelated, but maybe not. In any case with CMUD around the corner and this not annoying me to any great degree since it only happens to me at login, I figured I'd see if it was present in CMUD before posting.

rainchild you might try ipconfig /flushdns at the command line.

You might have a screwed up DNS cached record thats screwed up

Just a thought. There are a few others things that cause this in normal day to day internet. Might try doing a line quality check and dslreports.com too.. i did that and found out certain times of the day my ping doubles.

The last thing that comes to mind is much more common.

With power management features what they are now all NIC cards have the ability to set a sleep on inactivity. What happens is you have to wake them up when you go to use them again and that can cause a temp lag spike. Check your settings on your nic card to disable that. Its under the power management of the ethernet card driver. It will say allow windows to turn off this device to save power. Uncheck it save and reboot.. might help ya out

Yeah I don't think it's the DNS casche because it happens first thing in the morning - after the lappy boots into windows the first thing I run is zMUD. I think it's probably a lack of an entry for the MUD in the DNS cache and possibly slow DNS resolver.

It definately seems to be an issue with the client (or windows APIs) as opposed to a line quality thing, beause if I type 'sdf sdf sdf sdf sdf sdf sdf sdf sdf sdf sdf sdf' on the command line, nothing appears until the client unfreezes. Next time it happens I will check to see if it's a 100% cpu thing - ie infinite loop - or a 0% cpu thing - ie blocking 'wait for event' call.

As for the NIC - I have my lappy networked with my desktop to share the same mouse and keyboard, so the fact I was sending multiple keystrokes / mouse move events via the NIC means it wasn't in hibernate or anything like that.

Edit: It's a 0% cpu thing - so must be a blocking call of some kind.

Well, even though it was an entirely fresh install, I did try recreating the charater file and deleting zmud.ini to no success. I've been having some trouble with my video card... any thought on how that could possibly be related?

I also play on Achaea, and though it is rare I have seen some occassional large lags. My trigger set is sufficently extensive to say that triggers are not the problem, and that you should log a continous ping test during an offline period and review it.
