zMud 7.21 and Gemstone IV |
Most of the data on how to connect to Gemstone is several years old. Is anyone actually using zMud with Gemstone IV today?
I found an old link to Gemstone III in the mudlist and tried it.
I get the login pop-up and following authentication I get the character selection popup.
However, after selecting a character I get an error popup:
Lookup Error
Cannot lookup IP address for hostname:
L|PROBLEM|3
Further down the fill-in-the-blank has 255.255.255.255
Three buttons Try IPaddress, Try Name Again, Cancel.
I'm supposing there have been changes in the years since the last paper or post was written on this subject. Can anyone steer me towards login joy?
Thanks |

ZMud should already have automatic login support for GSIV. If you don't have a GSIV icon in your Characters window already, simply create one by selecting New and selecting it from the MUD Connector List. Strangely enough, MUD Connector doesn't seem to have an entry for GSIV, but GSIII is in there. I assume that would work just as well.
Connection info is as follows:
Hostname: eaccess.play.net|GS4
Port: 7900 (prime instance, I think, since it's the same as I use for DR and I'm in prime) |

Thanks for the response; however, problem still persists. Delete icon/folder and retry Gemstone III entry. No joy. Reinstall of zMud. No joy.
Gemstone III link prompts authentication. Authenticates appears to succeed. Following authentication it goes to character selection. I see my characters in the list. But following character selection it fails on an address lookup.
If I cancel, it dumps the connection. If I "Try Name again," it dumps me back to authentication. The default 255.255.255.255 obviously doesn't work and if I plug in 209.16.216.14 (nslookup for eaccess.play.net) I get a blank screen and <return> or any entry responds with ?
Additionally, I've tried entering combinations of information from the output of SGE but no joy. :( |

GOT IT! Bad GSIV <smack> In the authentication window there is an option for Gemstone IV... Don't use it. Use the plain options for Gemstone III or Gemstone Platinum (I got access to both).
The fact that one is paying/playing it is GS4 is irrelevent. In fact if you select GemstoneIV it fails.
We have joy now.
Thanks. |

I currently only have one play.net account. However, I have discovered that I can't login to prime and platinum at the same time.
I may be spinning up a second account in the next few days. I've been in Meridian59, Asheron's Call, Anarchy Online, DAoC, SWG, and WOW for so long, I feel so utterly noobish returning to the mud world as a mortal.
I'll post again if I can get multi-play going.
I have been scouring the net but there just isn't much modern info posted about gemstone or zmud scripting for any of simutronics games. What little I found on Yahoo (DR stuff) seems to be gathering dust.
Cheers |

More details. What exactly is going wrong? Does Character #2 connect and boot off Character #1? If so, your mud probably doesn't allow multiplay and is automatically disconnecting existing accounts connected from the same IP address (this is a security feature). |

The mud allows multiplay extensively, so long as you pay for multiple accounts. I know of some folks he have 4 or more going at once.
When i try the make second icon for entering the mud via the mud selection, it just sends me to the initial button.
I tried copying the button and delted out the account name and password when i edited it, yet its managing to get the info from the original button, not allowing me to enter new account information. |

I think I know what's going on. What happens is that by default ZMud saves character info in a subfolder based on the session id. By default, the session id is the same as the title of the mud as it appears in the mud list or in the bidding icon properties (minus standard disallowable characters in filenames like spaces, apostrophes, and so on). For instance, the Dragonrealms MUD will by default save settings in the Dragonrealms subfolder and will save to a settings file named Dragonrealms.mud. When ZMud loads a character, it uses this session id to scan for settings files. If one is found that has the same name as the session id, this file is loaded. This is where your problems are coming from.
To fix this, go into each character's character properties (select each character but instead of hitting the connect or offline button click the Edit button). Since ZMud changes the order of the icons displayed based on chronological order of access--in other words, last in first out--the main thing you will want to do is change the session id to something unique to help you identify each character. The second thing you'll want to do is check the file properties. You need to make sure that no file is set for the primary settings entry, or that whichever file you have is not the same name as the default. |
