I give up....can someone help?

I just downloaded zMud. I've used it before with no problems but this is a new one on me. I'm using Windows XP. Tried to log onto a mud called Aardwolf (again that I used to log onto all the time). But when I hit "connect" it just tosses me back off and says I lost the connection and every time it re-tries I get the same thing. It just can't seem to connect. I've tried using dofferent port numbers and even tried deleting it and re-downloading but nothing works. ANy help with this would be really appreciated!! Thanks

We need to get this into an FAQ.

When diagnosing connection problems (and your internet connection seems to work in general), please try:
1) Connecting to a different server
2) Connecting with a different client to the same server
3) Connecting with a different client to a different server

Preferably, the other client should be Windows Telnet to keep it basic.

If the other client works, make sure that the connection settings are really the same. Example: if your server is listed as an IP number, try using the name (like "theserver.com" instead of "12.34.56.78" in case the server has moved).

When you get that far, we can be much more helpful.

Is this a home computer, or a work/school/dorm one (those at work, school, or in your dorm network tend to shut down telnet or at least certain ports)?

Do you use proxy software to connect? Is ZMud set up to connect through this proxy?

Do you have a firewall enabled? Is it locking down all internet connections? Is it set up to allow ZMud to pass through?

I've connected easily with telnet...using the same ip addy as zmud lists.

And i can connect to other muds with no problems so I don't thnk it's a firewall thing. And if it connects to one mud I'd think it should be able to connect to the one I'm trying to get onto...namely Aardwolf.

This is my personal work computer and I own the store so nobody shuts things down.

Really appreciate the replies and hope this answers questions but I'm still stumped and any more suggestions would be welcome.

Try creating a new entry for the same server, specifying server+port from scratch- I'm trying to eliminate bad/corrupted settings for that character as a possibility.

Creating it from scratch worked. Must have been something corrupt in the character, as you said. Thanks a million for the idea and for the help. I just can't believe that the info was correct in-so-far as ip and port and it failed, while creating it from scratch worked. Anyway, thanks again for the suggestion. I really appreciate it!!
