Problem after installing 7.13b |
I was using an earlier version of Zmud but ended up having to reinstall XP. I backed up the folder for the particular mud I play, installed version 7.13b (the old version was completely removed) and dropped this folder back into the Zmud directory. I only found out after having done this that this is not the procedure outlined in the "how to upgrade" instructions.
When I run Zmud I now have the sample muds listed where I would have expected to see the characters. I tried moving them into a subfolder to hide them, but they're still listed. Also, I've moved the .mud files from my mud up one level from the folder I copied across, to try and make them appear as characters, but when I connect to the mud I play it seems to be using an old version of my settings, probably the mudname.mud file (that was created when I only had one character on the mud?) rather than the charnamemudname.mud files that are present.
I guess I'm asking what files should be present in which directory to make Zmud interpret things correctly. In addition, do I absolutely need any of the files I've not copied over? I am sure that this post shows what a low level of knowledge I have, and the only thing I can say in my defense is that I do have a full copy of everything from before reinstallation, if I do need some of the files I have not copied across. Unfortunately this was made with the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, and I'm worried that if I go there it will bring everything back when a clean start was the point of reinstalling.
Thanks for your help,

The best way to deal with this would be to copy your previous zMUD directory to the new system, then reinstall v7.13b to that directory. The problem is that if the files are not already in the directory when you install the new version, then they don't get converted to the newer formats used by the new version.
Everything needed for zMUD is contained within your zMUD directory. There aren't any files needed in the system areas or anything like that.
The files that you need in the main zMUD directory is mainly the CHARDB.* files. This is the database where your character list is shown. You can try deleting or renaming your current CHARDB.DB file and then store your previous CHARDB.MDB file and then run zMUD 7.13 to allow it to convert the older MDB file into the new DB format. That should restore your character icon.
It is also useful to keep your ZMUD.INI file since that has various global settings stored in it. |

That's unfortunate news, but if that's the way forward, then I'd better get on with it. Thank you for taking the time reply.
