No splash screen at all? That is indicative of an eLicense problem, and given that you even GOT an error message it's probably corrupted or not properly installed or otherwise messed up rather than simply not running (unless Zugg had to change what was happening when going to compressed format).
However, to get the easier thing out of the way, let's check if eLicense is installed and running. This is all for Windows XP, dunno if it matches well enough to follow in earlier versions:
1)Right click on My Computer, select Manage from the popup menu.
2)a window will appear titled Computer Management. Expand the Services and Applications heading located in the left panel, and click on Services.
3)In the right panel will appear a list of services and their current statuses. Locate the one named LicCtrl Service. It should have the following properties:
Description -- License Control Service
Status -- Started
Startup -- Automatic
Log On As -- Local System (Remote Desktop and similar users might have something different)
If Status is not Started, then you need to start the service before ZMud will work. Try and start it, then try ZMud again (might need a restart, too).
If it's Started, something else is the problem and probably requires help from the eLicense techies or from Zugg. While you are waiting, you can try to redownload/reinstall to see if that fixes the problem.
Should you get any further and you see an Error 23, that's the eLicense "I've fallen, and I can't get up!" error message that requires the eLicense diagnostic utility. |

LicCtrl service refuses to start as well as zMUD. I click on the zMUD shortcut on the desktop and it show the hourglass mouse icon then stops, nothing is ever run.
I did as you suggested Matt, but I get this error.
Could not start the LicCtrl Service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
Any ideas?

Make sure you are logged into your Admin account when you try to start the LicCtl service. If you still can't start it, then try going to the http://www.zuggsoft.com/zmud/elicense.htm page and down near the bottom you can download the eLicense uninstaller. Run this, then reboot, then log into your Admin account and try running zMUD again. This should install a fresh copy of the eLicense stuff.
If you still can't get the eLicense LicCtl service to start and still get the error 1053 then you'll need to contact eLicense directly at support@elicense.com. |

I am logged on as Admin, I got to the elicence control in the control panel and double click it and it doesn't open another folder or anything.
Right clicking on zmud.exe in the zmud directory does not list an unlicence option either.

Ok this is getting irritating, I have been at this at least 10 hours now.
I have run the eLicence Uninstaller, it gives you NO confirmation, I reboot and it's still listed under Services Manager as automatic, not started.
zMUD still refuses to start because licctrl isn't running, no trial screen, no nothing.
I have fully uninstalled zMUD a few times as well, with no results.
Does anyone know how I can resolve this?

either delete Elicence in safe mode or prepare for formatting the hard drive.

I am having the EXACT same issues. According to MS website the error 1053 is fixed by .net 1.1 (sp1) But it didnt work for me. I got the patch from e-license, and still no luck. I ran their diag program and sen them the data...that was a few days ago, and nothing. Rappy I did everythig you did as well, still no luck. See my post Application error, FAQs Dont help. I even went back to a system restore point to a week before I started having the peoblem, and still nothing. Trust me, I feel your pain. I am logged in as admin, have installed zMUD as Admin, have uninstalled/reinstalled it as Admin, all o no avail. Formatting cant possibl be the only option. This has been irritating is an understatement.

This has nothing to do with .NET. And do *not* reformat your computer. Don't try to manually delete eLicense if the uninstaller doesn't work since that might screw up your computer worse than it is.
As I mentioned before, you'll need to contact eLicense directly at support@elicense.com and request their diagnostic program. At this point it's the only way to get this fixed is to work with them directly.
If you have run their diagnostic and not gotten any response, then email them again and just be patient. These kind of system-specific problems can be hard to debug for them, especially if you have been messing with the registry yourself or restoring system restore points. By now you have probably messed up the registry enough that eLicense thinks you are trying to hack it, and only eLicense can help repair that.
Also, since nobody has mentioned their version of Windows, keep in mind that zMUD doesn't work on the 64-bit edition of Windows. And also since nobody mentioned what version of zMUD they are using, be sure you have the latest 7.13b version. |

Sorry, I am using Windows XP SP2 and zMUD 7.13b, not that I think this matters at this point. From all I have seen it is an eLicence problem and not zMUD. I sent an email to them yesterday and am still awaiting a response (gah they are slow) Hope I hear from them soon. Not that it's your fault Zugg, but damn this is annoying to deal with, I mean I paid for the program and it's upsetting when I can't get it to run.

Like Rappy, I am on XP (SP2) using zMUD 7.13B. And no blame or frustration aimed your way. Just frustrated in general. The e-licence people have been helpfull, just right now I think we have hit a wall.
