Invalid data!!

That's the incredibly useful error I get when I try to open zMUD today. It worked okay yesterday and I exited like I usually do. Version is 7.13 (b I think) running on Win 98 SE. Ever since the upgrade from 7.05 when ever I started I'd get a momentary Converting Database notice and the program would open. Until today.

Looking in the MUD's directory (Inferno) I see an .mdb with a date of 02/26/05, about the date I updated from 7.10. It won't open with Access 97, though; unregognized file format. I see Inferno.mud with a date/time about the time I quit yesterday, and Inferno_bak.mud with a date/time a few minutes earlier. Move Iaferno.mud aside and rename _bak; no luck.

Now what?

complete reinstall. There was a bug circa 7.10 that corrupted files that didn't get completely fixed until 7.12 or 7.13.

Well, yesterday I threw away everything, including the 7.13 download, downloaded 7.13b and installed it, then started piecing everything back together so far as triggers and aliases, then quit last night. Tonight I try to open zMUD and -- "Invalid data!!" This is vexing.

I'm assuming that your installation went flawlessly. From the moment the installation ended, what exactly did you do? Did you simply copy your backup files back into the zmud directory? Did you create completely new characters with completely new files? When you got to the triggers and aliases and such, did you recreate them by hand (not using the migration guide, simply copy/pasting within ZMud, or simply editing the character to use your backup)? If not, which of the other methods did you use?

No, I tossed everything including the original directories. There were no back-ups to copy.

Yup. See above.

By hand. Only did a few before knocking off, mostly color-change triggers and an alias or two.

One weird thing, now that I think about it: I didn't have to go through the registration routine. When I uninstalled, I used the uninstall icon in the zMUD directory, then deleted everything that remained, including the directories. I had a vague thought there must have been something left in the registry but didn't think anything about it until now.
