just reformatted my pc today and unlicensed my old version of zmud which i think was 7.05... copied my old files back to the c:\zmud dir and downloaded the new 7.10 zmud and installed that overtop of my old files. Of course i still have a backup of it but when it ran it mentioned something about having to download zsconvert to convert my old mud files and before i could even do anything it came up saying it was converting my old files. When it finally loaded my character selection screen was empty. The old files are physically there just cant use them. Anyone encounter this or know how to fix it? or know where i can get zsconvert i didnt see it on the downloads page

zsconvert.exe is part of the installer, so it should have gotten installed to your zMUD directory when you ran the 7.10 installer. So check your zMUD directory, or run the installer again.

To force zMUD to convert your old database again, delete the blank CHARDB.DB database file, and the MUDLIST.DB MUD database. Then when you run zMUD it will run zsConvert to reconvert your old files.

Not sure how you didn't get zsconvert.exe into your zMUD directory though...very wierd.

yah no clue i didnt see if it was in the actual zmud directory it just told me i needed to download it and then it appeared to run it. Not sure if it had something to do with zmud not technically being installed or not. I had just formatted and copied the whole directory back to C and then installed over top of it like i always do and the char database was blank when it finished even though it took a minute or two to convert the files. I did reinstall 7.05 before the reply though and ran that fine. I just reinstalled 7.10 overtop of that and its fine. So it must have something to do with the registry that or just an odd coincidence

As an aside, I installed zmud 7.10 and it said it couldn't find zsconvert, but when I checked the folder it was there. I'd copied my old files, uninstalled 7.05 and ran a clean install of 7.10.

I did notice the small d/l and 2.5mb .exe instead of 7mb.

zsconvert didnt go to my zMUD directory either, it went to the dafault download spot i have set in Mozilla Firefox.. that might be the issue.

I just checked the installer, and it properly has a copy of zsconvert.exe and it properly places it into the installation directory, at least on all of the systems I have tried. I'm clueless as to why this isn't working on some systems.

Are you SURE the zsconvert that is in your Mozilla folder is the new v3.00 version? Run it and you'll see the version in the upper-right corner of the window. Make sure it isn't the older 2.x version.

Sorry, to clarify - zmud did place zsconvert in the correct folder. When I mentioned copying my old files I just meant as a backup copy. I did a full uninstall of zmud before running the v7.10 installation, so there was no old zmud folder or files that it would have found. There was just one message at the end of the install saying it couldn't find zsconvert.exe, but regardless of that message it was there. So it was nothing major, just seemed to throw up the message for no reason.

same thing happened to me, but i noticed that zmud put itself in a different location...

if i'm correct zmud 7.05 defaulted to c:/zmud where as 7.10 went to c:/program files/zmud

might have been part of the problem?

Yes, that's true. The default location of zMUD has changed to be more consistent with modern software.

You should put a checker in the install program to catch such errors

I'm not sure what you mean by putting a checking into the install program. There isn't any error here that I can see.

I check for previous versions of zMUD so it defaults to what ever directory its already in instead of making a new one... a new one is still an option of course

It already checks the registry key called InstallDir to determine where zMUD is installed. I'll check to make sure the new installer is using the same registry key as the old installer. So if it's not doing this, it's a bug.

Yep, it turns out the installer was using a different registry location ("Zugg Software" instead of "Zuggsoft") compared to the older versions. I've updated it for 7.11 so it will use the old registry location so that it will be easier to upgrade.

Unfortunately, this means that installing 7.11 after 7.10 will "forget" the location you used for 7.10 and will use whatever directory you specified for older versions of zMUD.
