Are you using Windows NT, 2000 or XP? None of this versions will run the free version of zMUD. Someone, somewhere might have gotten it to run in one of these versions previously, but it is not that easy.
If you are trying to open it from a shortcut, check to make sure that the shortcut does point in the correct location of your zMUD executable. This is more of a Windows issue than a zMUD issue, but anyway, check out the Properties of that shortcut and make sure that the contents of the Target box are correct.

To whereever you installed zMUD. Normally, this would be:
C:zMUDzmud.exe

So are you using one of the versions of Windows mentioned above?
Also, try clicking directly in the zmud.exe file. Thinking about it a bit more, the free version comes as a zipped file. So, the place where you will find zmud.exe depends entirely on where you unzip the files to. Try doing a search for files on your computer and look for a file named "zmud.exe".

the newer ones work, the whole d/l for vs 3.63 is 525 kilobytes, that doesn't seem right.. I have all the help files and readme, the exe, but no config, is that right?

Simply put, 3.62 does not reliably work on XP. XP does not come with the necessary DLL files or does not activate them upon installation. I only know enough to suggest you try compatability mode, but I seriously doubt that will get it working.
Compatability mode can be found in the XP help file, so I'll leave you to find it.

The reason that the free version won't run on XP is because it is an older 16-bit application and XP doesn't fully support these types of programs. Not even Compatibility Mode will work in this case.
There _is_ a 32-bit version of 3.62 that works in XP though it isn't available directly from zuggsoft.com. You can get it here. Note: this is from a 3rd party site which Zuggsoft doesn't control so download at your own risk. Even if you get it working, 3.62 isn't supported.
Sure, you might get some help by asking here in the forums but you are on your own for the most part.
