this script works with Med not sure if it works with anythink else but it displays how many steps when you use survey instead of "far in the distance and so on".
#substitute {in the immediate area} {(0)}
#substitute {close by} {(1)}
#substitute {not far from here} {(2-6)}
#substitute {off in the distance} {(7-11)}
#substitute {several miles away} {(12-21)}
#substitute {far off in the distance} {(22-46)}
#substitute {tens of miles away in the distance} {(47-66)}
#substitute {many miles away} {(+67)}
