Perhaps you've got Parsing turned off, or your zMUD Command Character is changed or disabled.
To test parsing, hit Ctrl-R. The little "Computer" icon to the right of the zMUD command line should either have a red line through it (parsing off) or not (parsing on). You want parsing on.
If that's not the trick, then go into Prefs and go to the Special Characters page, and make sure that the zMUD command character is # and that it's enabled.
Short of that, I'm not sure what to check.
