Automapper, why hast thou forsaken me?

I seem to be having the same problem with automapper that Larkin and Y3kpanic were having and who posted to that effect; mapping is going along fine and then *poof* the automapper fails to continue working. Look, reconfiguring the mapper, setting position, and all other readily available remedies, fail to solve the problem. The mapper simple ceases to follow you from room to room. You can move a single room which the mapper will recognize, but move another room and the mapper does not follow. Setting position fixes the problem for a single move, then it ceases to follow again.

I have searched and read the forums for hours, read the help files (several times each), and remapped several times as well, all to no avail. I know that this problem seems nebulous at best, and that a solution would be hard to pinpoint, but I’m obviously not the only one having trouble (and Larkin seems quite savvy at coding). I really haven’t seen the problem addressed at all even when asked. The wouldn’t be a major problem if it was a question of scrapping a couple of rooms, but when the mapper begins to act in this fashion the whole map is a waste—there is no getting it back on track. Do you have any solutions, suggestions, patches, etc. for such a meldown?

I’m sure this will turn into a back-and-forth thread, so please forgive this in advance. Thank you.

Brad.

Sorry to have posted twice. The website said there was problems so I rewrote the thing, and then it posted it anyway.

Other post deleted since you seem to favor this one.

Only reason I know for the mapper to not follow when in follow mode is an error in the map. This could be anything from the exit being wrong to name or description not matching.

When following in map mode the mapper does things a little differently sometimes. Exits are created as one way links and pointed to another link going the opposite direction. When those links are transversed they are flagged as tested. So an exit can tested in one direction and untested in the other direction. In map mode this is taken into account and the mapper tries to verify the room information for the expected destination. If it matches then the link is updated to tested, otherwise a new room is supposed to be created.

I have seen the mapper fail to follow or create a room during this step. I think there may be a bug or 2 behind it, but they are so hard to consistently reproduce that a report can't be made about them. If this is the situation where you and others are seeing this problem then all you have to do is switch to follow mode when not actively mapping. Turn on the Appearance option for 'Show untested links as gray', and when you find a room that doesn't get stepped into correctly try and examine all the destination room data looking for what inconsistencie caused it to fail verification.

I got tired of looking an just added some queries directly into my database to set links as tested. When I finish mapping a section I do my follow-mode double check then close the mapper and run the queries and then reopen the mapper.

If that isn't the situation where the mapper stops following then you will have to try and explain what is going on when it happens. Be very detailed about it, because figuring out mapper configurations with out the automatic system is tough enough. Trying to debug a complex override script isn't any better. And just saying you reconfigured and it still didn't work doesn't mean anything to me, because I have seen the reconfigure uses things in the current configuration as a basis.
