Materia Magica

Hi

Is there a way to get the mapper to get the description, my mapper works fine in the town, but it cant map outside the town, it make the room with the name and exit but no desc. and when I turn to follow mode it cant follow.

Here are 2 rooms outside the town.

 The Mudapa Plains NW N NE

(-------------------------------------------------) W <---(M)---> E
SW S SE

.*^*^^^^^
#...^^^^^^^
*##..*^^^^^^*
***##...*^^^^^^
****##.@.^^*^^*
*****#.*..^^^^*
*****#...*^^^
****#**..^^
***#***.*

  Fraou Forest                                           NW     N     NE

(-------------------------------------------------) W <---(M)---> E
- - SE

~~~**...#
**~~*#####.
*#**~##**..#.
**##=#@***.##
**IIIOI***..#
II~==III**.
~=====III
Here is a room from the town and it works ok.
  Lewis Street                                           -      N      -
(-------------------------------------------------) - <---(M)---> -
- S -
Traversing the entire length of the city from the North Gate to the
southern one, Lewis Street was named after one of the mayors of the old
town. A fine, broad street that's well maintained, one can find people from
all walks of life along its stretch. The walls containing the North Gate
rise immediately to the north.
I have fond out that if I copy the description into the room properties/description I can then use it in follow mode, but I cant get the mapper to get the description from outside the town.
I think it has something to do with all the spec char. like *^#@. ´there is in the description.
Please help
I know this isn't an answer to your actual question, but i'd just like to say that i think you should reconsider trying to map outside areas. MM has literally millions of rooms and this will quickly make your map and system crawl.
What i did when i played there was just concentrated on mapping within cities and inside areas (anything that didnt show the overhead map basically). Then i just used speedwalks between those areas, with a #TELEPORT trigger to move me to the beginning of the new area once i reached it.
Again, i apologize for this 'non-answer' but i really think it's the best way to handle this.
Just wanted to retract my statement above that "MM has literally millions of rooms".
I will adjust that to the likely more accurate "MM has literally hundreds of thousands of rooms".
I will agree with doomfyre on this, that you should really give up trying to map wilderness areas (this would be true on MM, Discworld, BatMUD, RetroMUD, Medievia, etc.) The number of rooms is just a bit too much.
A few alternatives if you want to continue trying:
1. Don't grab the room description - just use exits and room names. This keeps the size of your map database file down as well.
2. You are correct it is the special characters. I assume you are using the mapper config provided by Scrooge and/or Widan from AlyriaOnline.com. You can pick up room descriptions with special characters by useing %* instead of just *. Please learn about the security implications before doing so, however!
Thanks for the reply.
No Iam not going to map all the wildness only the roads, so if I make a search for a room, I can walk to that room even if its in a other town but still on the same island.
But I have find out that I can use:
#ALIAS OnRoomCreate {%RoomDesc( ,"#")
It put a # in the desc and that does work for the mapper so it can follow.
I mapped all of alyria with no problems or performance just by jumping between zones. I am not going to say its the bees knees in performance but its certainly not lagging.
edb: That's a bit odd considering that the mapper in CMUD 2.37 is a direct port of the mapper in zMUD. You should post to the CMUD forums if you are having trouble with the mapper since it's been rewritten in the CMUD 3.x Beta.
