Changing Button Captions/Colours

Changing Button Captions/Colours: Is there an easy way to do this programmatically? I see in the Helpfile you can create a whole new button with a command, but I can't find anything about changing existing properties.

You can create a button with a variable in the caption. Then changing the variable changes the caption.
