zMud, Linux, + Wine - good news |
Hi all,
Just in case anyones still wondering if this works..
I installed the latest WineX (from TransGaming, compiling myself from the CVS) a couple of days ago, and decided to try out zMUD on it. And to my surprise, it worked.. No tweaking, no need to have Windows installed anywhere. zMUD 5.55 installed and ran, 6.16 runs alos, starting the elicense runservice thingy and without complaining. Network works too. I haven't tried entering my license key yet, but I'll give it a go..
No complaints about the speed. The only wierd thing is the special window/frames that zMUD uses, they look decidedly strange..
So, if anyone wants hints, binaries, config files, whatever.. Just ask :)
Lady C.
(Diablo1 didn't work though, and that was the reason I wanted wine.. *sigh*) |

Cool! Thanks for posting this Castaway. I'm glad to hear the emulators are getting better and better.
You might want to also test the 6.25 beta version since it uses the latest eLicence wrapper. My guess is that the eLicense stuff will always be the toughest to emulate correctly since it's a system level service.

Is there anyway to get a screenshot of that weirdness?

Hmm..
Have to take some of this back *g* - 6.16 and 6.25 don't work, I just get a infinite loop looking for 'Mailslotinfo'.. *sigh* (Does install, and start service, and ran once, but no more..)
5.55 does however.. Screenshot see:

Stupid me! *hehe*
So.. 6.25 *does* work.. it fooled me, because it opens two windows, the second one for the runservice.exe from elicense.. Just had to minimize (not close! :) this window.. and there was zmud -> http://desert-island.dynodns.net/zmud/screenshotWinezMUD625.jpg
Not got the actual licensing to work yet, but the evaluation runs..

Lucky b***, I could get 3.62 to install and run fine, couldn't find a copy of 5.55 so I didn't try that one. But zmud 6.16 and 6.25 both hang when I press evaluate, eating up all my cpu power untill I send a signal 9 to the process (let it run for 20 minutes, nothing happended).
I used the CodeWeavers wine for this (pre 1.0 wine).
Brian,
ps. if You got some rpm's or binarys that work with zmud 6, I wouldn't mind getting a copy :) |

How do they hang? Do you get two windows, one for elicense and one for zMUD? Are you using Wine without windows, or running a windows installation which is already there? Did you install zMud with Wine or use an installed one?
I don't have any rpms, I got winex direct from the CVS.. I can tar that up and send it to you, if you like.. You can have the binaries as well, no idea if they'll work anywhere else tho :)
I'm also using a setting of "Desktop" = "800x640" in my wine config, not full screen.

Just get that one screen, nothing else. I don't have windows installed anywhere, and I used wine to install zmud.

Send me a mail and I'll send you the binaries.

I've sent in an entry with a description of the problem to http://appdb.codeweavers.com
If you want this fixed sooner you may want to register there and vote for zMud (currently ranked #16) and hopefully it'll get fixed sooner. Go to http://appdb.codeweavers.com/appview.php?appId=513 to view the entry. I hope to see this beat Halflife as #1 soon :)
The missing (stubbed out) calls are part of kernel32.dll so you can't just use the native kernel either.

With 6.26a BETA I get an error dialog that states:
Error initializing database engine
Your computer does not have the needed system files to run this software...
with a link to http://www.zuggsoft.com/data/
I'm trying to figure out how to install MDAC now. I'm using wine release 20020122, but I'm also going to update that.
