Usually you can just pull it back up with your mouse after it disappears, if not, reinstall always fixes it.

ok i have the same problem and it is very annoying to me also. a reinstall shouldnt be necessary and the only other option i can find is to always click the edit button or something like that. Can I request in later zmud versions you make an option to redock the edit window after it is accidently dragged out? I hope you know what I mean....

You can redock the edit window by dragging around to where you want it docked. You may have to hold down the ALT key if you have that option selected in the preferences. Should these fail delete the file setting.dok in your zmud directory. This file is created by Zmud after install so the uninstaller does not erase it.

There is no setting.dok in my zmud folder. In fact I searched my entire hard disk and found no setting.dok file anywhere. And yes I did specify the option to show hidden files so I cannot understand what is going on. As for the other solution I really don't understand what you mean because as far as I have ever known dragging a window simply has the effect of repositioning it which is what happens so no surprise there. The alt key has absolutely no effect. Is there a special way to drag a window that suggests redock rather than merely change the position on the screen? Now I am truly confused. I am using windows98 and I apparently have zmud version 6.16 although when I choose check for new versions from the menu it incorrectly reports that I have the latest alpha (6.25) but then that is another problem entirely.

So long as you can see enough of the edit window to drag it around, you can try this method:
1)make sure Layout is unlocked (nothing will dock anywhere if it's locked)
2)make sure the Settings window is set to Dockable (the option can be found in the File menu of the Settings window, I think). This allows the Edit window to dock to the settings window.
3)unless you have it set to ALT-dock, simply drag the edit window to the lower right corner until you see the docked shadow where you want it.
4)once docked, adjust your layout as you want it
5)this is the important thing, you must now SAVE your layout or the Settings window will go back to its messed-up state. If you don't get the Overwrite dialog, then go find the ".lay" file and rename it to the correct filename. You'll have to delete the old layout file in order for the rename to happen.

See if it happens with a pure settings file (newly created). If not, your settings may be corrupted. If so, your inherited settings (usually in default.mud) might be or something else could be wrong. In that case, you might try deleting the zmud.ini file.
If the settings are corrupted, however, follow the steps in the the Migration Guide: http://www.zuggsoft.com/zmud/migrating.htm
