Colored words getting black background instead of game's default color

I feel like this is probably an easy fix, and I'm missing something simple. Here is a picture:

Basically, colored words are displaying black backgrounds behind them, instead of the default background color the mud is sending. If I use one of the default colors (red, blue, etc) it only makes the first letter in the colored word black. I am using #cw to do the coloring.

Any advice to make it let the background color show?

Hmm, that looks like a bug. Maybe try #pcol instead of #cw?

Nope, same result if I use #pcol <color> %x0 (pretty sure that's the correct syntax, yeah?).

I don't get it. I see usual mud background (black), only with some lines that have green background.

when you USE a coloring command (like #CW or #PCOL) and you do not specify a background color, it assumes black.

How can I tell it to use the default color the mud is sending. In this case, the mud is sending green (that's the color I have that channel set to, the mud does the coloring), but it might send blue or white or whatever, based on what channel the word is being used in. I am not setting that green. That's the mud. Is there a way to specify just...default/transparent for background?
