Actually...maybe a fresh start wouldn't be so bad |
I have a lot of old aliases and macro keys set that probably do the same things, as this has been my first experience with zmud. Perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad idea to start from scratch again now that I know more about what I'm doing.
What is the best way to totally uninstall the program and reinstall it with no reference to the old settings file? I'd like to make this as painless as possible, so any recommendations before I take the plunge would be great. Thanks! |

You may not have to uninstall. Just remove the references to the different .MUD files used by your different characters/connections. Then you can start new settings files for each one.

How do I go about removing the references? Is this a removal of files you are talking about? Or do you just mean to delete the aliases/macros/menu items from within the settings editor window? Would there also be some way to reset my preferences back to default (may have clicked something that I shouldn't have somewhere down the line)?
It would be great if I could just get rid of a whole file that contained the info for this character, then restart zmud and have it be a fresh slate as far as the settings go.
(at least I think it would be great) |

For the old settings, you can just copy/paste in to notepad what you want to keep, and then erase the .mud file for that character. Re-create it, and add in your buttons/triggers/macros etc for the character when you recreate the file. :)

Ok please forgive me. I swear I'm not trying to be dense here, just cautious. When I erase the MUD file for this character, should I find it in the folder on my hard drive and delete the file that way? Or are you suggesting that I erase the file using a different method.
Just want to make sure I do this right. Have had bad luck in the past with such things. |

Whatever floats your boat. I personally find the EDIT button on the Character Database window (the one that pops up after the red splash screen and which later corresponds to the CHARACTER button after you're connected).
1)get to the character database window (if you're connected already, it's ok to just click the CHARACTER button)
2)highlight the character you need and click the EDIT button.
3)click on the FILES tab and remove any .MUD file names you see.
4)click on the little folder icon next to Primary (and Inherited, if you plan on using them).
5)In the File Browser window, navigate to the ZMud subfolder for that character or wherever you have the .MUD files.
6)highlight each file you wish to delete, and delete it (via the DELETE key or the righ-click menu).
7)close the window (DO NOT CLICK ON THE OPEN BUTTON), or choose another file to use, and get back to the EDIT window referred to in steps #2 and 3.
8)click the SAVE button on the character database screen, and connect.
9)click the SETTINGS button, and a new settings file should appear (if not, first close whatever file appears and then click the Settings|New... menu).

My personal recommendation would be DON'T delete the existing .mud file (you can do that later when you're satisfied you won't be going back to it). To start with brand new settings files:
- get to the character database window (if you're connected already, it's ok to just click the CHARACTER button)
- highlight the character you need and click the EDIT button
- click on the FILES tab and type in a new name for the Primary mudfile (perhaps the character's name, or add an A or 1, B or 2, etc, to the existing name). Use the .mud extension
- Do the same for the Inherited file if you've been using it (many people don't and should leave it as is)
- Click the SAVE button
Now open the character by clicking either the CONNECT button or the OFFLINE button and you'll have a fresh start. Be prepared to rewrite your login triggers, directions, and directional macros if you've changed the Inherited file.

Thank you all for your advice. I ended up moving my old settings folder to another location, opening the connection window and deleting the character reference using the delete button there.
