Quick question -
I have a variable that I'm trying to put a word with an @ inside - It tries to parse both the variable "parent" and the variable within it. I don't want it to expand in this case, but can see how it would be beneficial in other cases. Any way I could temporarily turn this off?

Yes, take a look at the %expand function in the help files.
