Purchasing CMUD 3.xx |
Im running 3.03 on a trial, based on a lisence I have for cmud, which I got because I purchased zmud juuuust before cmud came out. It appears to me, that due to version 3 being a "major" upgrade (going to 3.xx itself) would prevent me from upgrading to it with my existing lisence. So, it appears to me, that I will have to purchase 3.xx for it's first public release. but to be honest, I'd just as soon purchase it now (believe it or not, I feel guilty for not having to drop more coin on cmud) and get it registered, so I can begin using the package library, aaaand just to get it out of the way. But as far as I know, I can't yet "purchase" 3.xx... Can I?

The way I understand it... The way the license works is (as you've noted) that it's good for two years plus updates to the major version that you were on at the end of those two years. So since a "new major version" release of 3 will almost certainly happen within the next two years, if you purchase a license now your license will be valid for that release, and then for all minor 3.xx releases after that point. (In fact, if a year and 11 months from now Zugg releases version 4, your license would be valid for that, too, as well as all the minor 4.xx versions after that point.)

Basically, don't purchase a new license until your existing one stops working. Cmud 3.x doesn't yet require a new license. You should be able to go to the zuggsoft store and sign in using the email you gave when you bought CMUD (or received it free, like you did). Request a new key, and then put that key into your CMUD 3.x installation, and it should work.
Whether or not this will change in the future isn't known - the system doesn't rigidly enforce a two-year limit. Whether or not a new version requires a new license is decided by Zugg each time, albeit with the caveat that you'll never have to buy a new license within two years of buying your old one.
Essentially, what this means is that the first 3.x public version may or may not require a new license - I wouldn't buy one until it's known for sure.
However, nothing's stopping you buying one out of that guilt you're feeling ;P |
