Ubuntu 8.04 with WINE 1.0 (stable) |
As the topic suggests I am currently running Ubuntu 8.04 and using WINE 1.0. However when I try to run Cmud (any version, and the same with the latest version of Zmud) via as much, I get an error message along the lines of
"For security reasons you must disable system debuggers before this program can be run."
Now, my question is this:
Is there anyway to get around this, or to run the program(s) without issue in Linux?
Reason I am asking is simply because all Linux mud clients I have tried have been rather lacking and sub-par when compared to zmud and cmud. |

That error's part of CMUD's copy protection, so the short answer is no.

You probably want to report it as a bug to the Wine developers. |

Yup, unless one of the members here uses it in Wine regularly, no one will be able to help you since CMUD isn't supported for Linux (or derivatives thereof)

There was a post recently discussing running CMUD on Linux... search around the forums.
Another alternative is MUDix, you can get it from my website: http://www.dubrin.net/downloads.html
It isn't as powerful as z/C but it is pretty all things considered. I like it and kMUDDY for Linux. |

Any word on this under 1.1? I dont want to go to an alternate, Ive been running Zmud under wine for a few years now and it was running great. Is a Zmud issue or a Wine issue? The error that comes up seems like a Zmud error. Guess Ill have to bust out vmplayer and my winxp disc.

As mentioned above this is a copy protection issue. If Zugg didn't use copy protection you would not get this error.
There isn't anything wrong in CMUD that is causing this. Armadillo is telling you that you are looking at things that
it does not want you to see so it will not allow CMUD to run. I believe some of the settings in WINE are mimicking
Software that would allow you to compile your own version of CMUD that wouldn't require a Key to run.
Armadillo is seeing this and blocking what it sees as an attempt to crack software that it is protecting.
Clear enough now? I THINK somebody was able to run CMUD under WINE and they posted the steps how. I'm not willing to look
through all posts you can find in a WINE search though sorry. |

It runs just fine with the command line options telling WINE not to load debugging info. And no, WINE isn't trying to decompile CMUD so you could recompile it without the protection, it is simply debugging files without proper authorization. Not to mention that I'm sure the proper SDK libraries with the proper debugging info are most likely NOT present and loaded.
There are many many tweaks to WINE that can be done to force software to run under it. Its all in the docs... and yes someone has already posted how to do it. |

I love Google. Not sure if this works for Cmud but it did for Zmud.
from home/username/.wine/drive_c/Programs Files/zMUD
I ran the following
winedbg=-all wine Zmud.exe
I have to run the command twice sometimes 3 time, but it eventually goes. |

Dude, the reason people were talking about cmud is because you were posting in the cmud discussion group, not the zmud group.
