cmud lite |
Someone posted in another thread somewhere, something about a Cmud Lite version, that could run on a USB drive without having to install the program on the computer?
I'm just curious to know if this is rumor or truth? I searched a few places, but couldn't find anything on this?
I'd love to be able to run this from my work pc, where I have telnet access, but only have KEA, which is a very horrible telnet client. |

It's not available yet. Once Zugg has had his eye surgery and had a chance to complete the MyMuds.com project it will then be available, the two go hand in hand as a CMUDLite will load your sessions from MyMuds.com which you pay for by subscription. I'm surprised you couldn't find the odd post about it around here somewhere, try using the old Site\Search rather than Google search.

Free CMUDLite program
A new, free, "lite" version of CMUD will allow you to play your MUD from any computer. CMUDLite will not require Admin privileges to install and won't have any copy protection. This will be a stripped-down version of CMUD (no mapper, no package editor or shared library), but it will support your session files saved on MyMUDs.com so that you can easily play from any computer. This project is still in it's early design phases, so more information will be provided during the year. CMUDLite will be released sometime after the debut of the MyMUDs.com site. |
Source.
This means you're probably looking at June at the very earliest. |

So we would have to pay a monthly fee for the service? Or subscription just meaning with the MyMuds site?

As I understand it, a basic MyMuds.com account will be free, but that only lets you store settings for a single session. CMUD Lite is a "read-only" client, so to speak, as it will not let you edit your settings and upload your changes to the server. (I presume that things created through the scripts themselves, especially variables, will be an exception.) If you want a fully capable client (which you'll need to create your own packages and such), you'll buy CMUD. If you want more sessions stored on MyMuds.com, you'll subscribe for a monthly/yearly fee.

Actually, this isn't quite right. I know this is confusing and I know I haven't published much official information about this. But there will be *two* clients:
CMUDLite: A free client that is limited in features. You *can* store local sessions, so you don't need a MyMuds account to use it. But it doesn't have a mapper, or settings editor, or package library, or many other features. It's essentially just the main CMUD window with the ability to run zScript. So it will run your existing package, but it will be hard to edit with it.
MyCMUD: This is also a free version of CMUD and is full-featured. But this is the client that can *only* connect to sessions stored on the MyMuds.com server. And unless you play a "sponsored" MUD session (paid by the MUD itself) you otherwise need a MyMuds.com subscription. The MyCMUD client is otherwise just like the full CMUD client in that you can edit your sessions. It is only limited in the ability to export/import or otherwise store sessions locally.
You only get a free single-session subscription to MyMuds.com if you have purchased the *full* CMUD or CMUDPro client. The full clients will store local sessions like they do now, but also connect to sessions stored on MyMuds.com.
Of course, all of this is subject to change. |
