Automapper?

I downloaded CMUD a while back but my trial has long since expired..looking to get back into it and buy the client, but I'm wondering about the automapper. How specifically does it work and how effective is it? Didn't find much info in the online help files.

I don't use the automapper so can't help much there.
On the trial though, I think it was reset with the introduction of version 2, so you might be able to try it again and see how the automapper works firsthand. Version 2 is in beta at the moment so not completely stable, but it'll be enough to give you an idea of things.

It works. There are some minor problems with it (mostly GUI stuff) that're going to be fixed in the future when the mapper is rewritten. At the moment the mapper uses ADO - it's going to be changed to use SQL, too.

Depending on the way your MUD organises its rooms, it might take some work to get the mapper detecting your rooms properly, but it's almost always possible unless your MUD does something crazy like variable room descriptions and no room names.

Specifically, the problems that I've found with the Automapper under cMUD are as follows: It runs much more slowly when creating rooms. You can not right-click on a link and alter its properties (one-way, door, etc). The only way I've found to modify a link is by deleting it and recreating it (or loading zMUD and using the mapper there). Also, and this may be my problem and not cMUD's, I've had to move the scripts from the properties and into the package and instead invoke them via aliases. If I put a script in the properties box, it just gets double-quoted (I imagine it means that there is an error in it) but the script runs fine from an alias.

You can, it's just really difficult to find the right spot to click on. You can edit links from the Exits tab of the room properties window, though.

Fang is correct...you just need to zoom in to right-click on. And the speed should be the same as zMUD since the automapper code in CMUD was directly ported from zMUD and hasn't been changed hardly at all.

I use room scripts all the time myself and have not seen the "quoted" problem that you mention. Perhaps you can start a new thread for a bug report and show an example of a script that is having this problem.

Remember that if you have problems with the Beta version and don't report them in bug-report topics in the CMUD Beta Forum, then they probably won't get fixed. I can't fix what I don't know about.

It's not reliable. Sometimes you can get it to work, other times no matter how long or how zoomed in you try the room is always the recipient of the click. It's fairly difficult to spot a pattern, but I assume it's a lingering issue from having the mapper docked sometime in that session. Same sort of stuff happens with the magnifying glass, though much of that is just gameside issues like including/excluding the graffiti tag in the room name.

Are you sure to make sure the map is in "Map" mode? If the map isn't in map mode, than all of the editing tools (like clicking on a link) are disabled.

I've been seeing that as well, and the map was definitely in edit mode. I think it got it work twice during the course of mapping about 2000 rooms.
