seems like an extra character added for the hell of it (since an extra key was added for the character to fit, they had a space free). They certainly could've used it for something more useful - perhaps ?)
I do occasionally use for the slightly annoyed smiley _ |

Yeah, I thought of that, but 's didn't exist when the UK keyboard was designed...

Yeah, but only as an AltGr key combination. I suppose they couldn't remove any letters without having the chance of breaking existing software.

We really need to scrap the current keyboard system and come up with a new one.

There is always Dvorak, but I like having a left-hand dominant keyboard layout. This allows me to do a lot of typing and work the mouse with my right hand. QWERTY is designed to slow down typing so that typewriters wouldn't bind as easily, but I think it works equally well in the mouse driven world. There is always the more surreal layouts like the frogpad which are designed for a single hand. However, I'm not sure how well that would actually work. |

Randall Munroe of xkcd fame's got a post about one-handed keyboard layouts on his blog/blag here, which seems like a good alternative to peripherals if you like left-handed typing. Dvorak also comes in both left and right formats, depending on which hand you prefer.

Um, we need to get back on track here...what's a good alternative for the Ctrl-Esc key?
Is something with the Pause/Break key feasable? |

Shift-Esc should already work, so if that's a good alternative then I'll just change the documentation.
