CMUD Upgrade clock

Charneus wrote:
Yeah. I have CMUD. Just gonna hold off installing it (and using my license) until I get a new computer. My old one decided to blow up on me. I'll have to see if I can figure out how to do that. I think I tried before, and wasn't successful.

The above quote is from this topic.

I wanted to start another topic for clarification, but unless I'm mistaken holding off on installing CMUD doesn't really benefit you. I'm assuming you'd consider this because you don't want to "start the upgrade clock" and by using the license. However it is my understanding that the upgrade clock starts from the date of purchase ( since I don't believe CMUD can track when the license is activated.) If that's the case then you're not really benefiting by not using the license immediately.

It possible (but unlikely) that you mean you don't want to use the activation code that was sent to you. The activation code that's sent is valid for 7 days and then you have to request it from the store again beyond that seven days. If memory serves correctly you can do this up to twice a month.

Charneus, please clarify your comment.

Zugg, please correct or confirm my understanding of the upgrade policy.

It'd make financial sense to hold off buying a new license til just after the next major release. So if v2 was out tomorrow and my license expired the day after then it'd make no sense for me to renew until v3 was out, since v2.* would be covered already and no reason to waste license time on a version that's already covered by a past license (speaking purely financially I mean, I know a lot of us would support Zugg anyway).

As you said though Tech, there's no 'activation' to speak of, so once you've bought it no reason not to use it.

It costs more for a tank of gas than Cmud. It costs more to go to a movie than Cmud.

Heck Zugg's running a special on Cmud currently.

Zugg releases versions when he does not on some 2 year cycle so trying to "time" a license makes even less sense.

I'm glad I'm not Zugg as this whole discussion would bug me for days. Heck I'd probably remember it 2 years from now when that next version comes out.

I'm almost certain that your 2 years of upgrades begin when you buy CMUD, not when you install it. Buying software implies you're going to use it, after all.

Yep, the 2 yr counter starts when you purchase, not when you install.

It really doesn't make any sense to wait. When v3.x comes out, it doesn't matter whether you had 1.x or 2.x. All that matters is whether 2 years have passed since your last purchase. And as people mentioned, I don't look at the calendar when I do a major release, so who knows whether 3.x will be out in 6 months, a year, or 2 years...there is no way to tell.

I've learned that if you try to wait for stuff like new versions, then you'll find yourself always waiting, and end up missing out on new features. After all, do you wait for the 2.0 beta release (which will be buggy), or do you wait for the 2.x public version? Once the 2.x public version is out, do you wait for the 3.0 beta version? It's very easy to get caught up in this and never get anything new.

And since I just filled my car's gas tank today, I had to laugh and agree with Llwethen statement. CMUD gives you more hours of entertainment for your dollar than most anything else I can think of. In fact, I was joking with someone the other day that CMUD actually *saves* you money! Because when you are addicted to MUDs and stay at home playing, then you spend a lot less money on gas :)

It used to be that there was more discrepancy between the life of a key and the time period you had to wait to get a new key (only once a month), so for example you install CMud. Two weeks later you reformat, but your key no longer works!, and you have to wait two more weeks to get a new key! Under those circumstances I've put off installing CMud/etc. during times when I knew I was going to reformat or change computers soonish.

Anyway, it sounds like that's changed, and it's all beside the point, since just imho it sounds like "I'm really lazy, I could install CMud but I'm getting a new computer soon so I would just have to copy everything over and it could go all to pieces and just be a huge pain, so I'm going to wait." (Which I find to be also valid. Most people I know aren't using CMud full time anyway.)

There's an easy way to get around that problem, gamma - just send a support email and ask them to reset it. As long as you don't do it every week, they're not going to get suspicious :P

Hey, it's Windows, sometimes I *DO* need to reformat every week.

Actually I just don't feel like being a pain and going through the pain to send e-mail. If I wasn't so lazy, I would be writing my own client specifically tuned for each game I play, or, you know, something (world domination, anyone?).

Tech, what I meant by that had nothing to do with upgrade clock. I currently run zMUD from my USB drive on a computer in my mother-in-law's office. It's not a permanent computer, so I don't want to use a license for something that is not going to be used by me in the upcoming months. As I understand it, you can only retrieve licenses a set number of times before the system says "Hey, you've used up your allowance for this time period. Try again in three months!"

I'm not worried about the upgrade clock at all. I just want to wait until I get my computer up and running once again (more likely buy a new computer) before I install it one more time. :)

You can retrieve a new license key yourself up to once every 30 days.

If you need help between times for special circumstances we're always happy to help as long as the system isn't being abused.

Charneus,

The way I understand it the system isn't counting computers anymore. The key lasts for 7 days after you request it and any computers that you install on during that time will just work. No calling home to see how many other computers you have activated lately.

That said the key belongs to YOU and the liscense is for ONE user. So if you are the only one who uses the copies of Zmud/Cmud you have activated you aren't violating the agreement.

I do a lot of reformatting and changing computers myself at work and I have a copy of each installed there. Mostly for helping on forums when I get bored at work and need a breather. But I haven't ran into the issue of the system calling me on how many copies I have installed since Zugg started using armadillo. I DO remember those issues with the old system though.

I think his point is more that he doesn't want to request a key now, and then buy a new computer later in the month and be stranded without a key. But like I said before, all you have to do is ask.

Right. I know that I can always ask for one without problems. I just don't want to go through the task of doing so. I'd rather just continue to use zMUD until I get my computer. Then I can set it up any way that I want to, and that will be including CMUD. :)
