Quick question about Cmud 2.0 |
It is my understanding that a jump in major version of Cmud will require us to pay for the new version and thereby resetting our 2yr thing. Is this true?
IE: Current version is 1.34 and the next release is ver 2.0. We would be required to pay for the 2.0?
Just curious. |

Nah, if it is a major version and your under two years I believe you get the new version free.
That said Zugg said that we get 2.0 free regardless this go round if we purchased Cmud already. |

Just to be perfectly clear:
Yes, 2.0 is a major version. As a major version, it would require you to pay for an update if you bought CMUD more than 2 years ago. But since CMUD hasn't been out that long, nobody bought CMUD more than 2 years ago, so nobody will need to pay for this upgrade.
New versions do not "reset our 2yr thing". For example, if v3.0 comes out in another year or so, then anyone who purchased CMUD more than 2 years before the release of 3.0 would have to pay for it. The fact that you upgraded to 2.0 this year doesn't "reset" anything. What matters is when you last paid for CMUD. If it's been more than 2 years since you paid anything, then a major version will require paying for an upgrade. Only when you actually pay for an upgrade does it then reset the 2 year counter. |

In other words, keep downloading until it won't let you use it. Then buy a renewal and repeat process. Right?

Well, what is CMud Pro supposed to include. I was trying to find a link to what addons and extras it would have but found nothing.

So far as I understand it the main difference is going to be the SSH and SFTP support. The SSH is expected soon and the FTP and SFTP supports are supposed to be in a relatively close future version. Any answer beyond that would require Zugg to tell you what he plans to put where.

Right now, CMUD Pro just has the SSH features (take a look here - bear in mind that that isn't the final 2.0 changelog, too). I'm not sure if there're more Pro-only features planned in the future.
EDIT: Argh, ninja'd :( |

I'll eventually post a comparison chart showing the differences between CMUD and CMUDPro. As mentioned above, the SSH (and eventual SFTP) support are the main features. However, CMUDPro also has the zMapper scripting built in.
zMapper provides a set of COM-based routines for more advanced scripting. See the zMapper help file for details. Normally, to use these COM objects within CMUD you must have zMapper installed and registered on your computer. With CMUDPro, you can use these advanced COM objects without needing zMapper, and you can load and view a zMapper-enhanced Map file without needing zMapper installed. You can also do some advanced map editing, such as resizing rooms. Basically, everything that you can normally do within CMUD when zMapper is installed can also be done in CMUDPro without zMapper installed. Obviously you'll still need zMapper if you want to open your map within zMapper to perform really advanced editing.
This same concept will apply when the new SQL Database Module is written next year. The database module within CMUD will be rewritten to use real SQL databases. By default, you'll be able to use SQLite databases. There will be a standalone module (maybe called zSQL?) that will allow you to edit/view/create your databases outside of CMUD (similar to how zMapper lets you edit maps outside of CMUD). This zSQL program will be an additional cost, much like zMapper is. zSQL will allow you to access *any* type of SQL database. And when zSQL is installed on your computer, the database scripting within CMUD will also allow you to access any type of SQL database. So, just like zMapper adds advanced COM scripting for the mapper, zSQL will add advanced database scripting.
As with zMapper, if you are using CMUDPro, then you will get the advanced SQL database scripting even if zSQL isn't installed on your system.
I know that sounds a bit complicated. I'm trying to figure out how to explain this all more simply so I can put together a feature comparison chart. |
