One possible thing he can try is manually entries to his registry (perhaps changing or adding a benign value where CMUD would) and see if he is able to store that.

I cleaned Zuggsoft out of my registry (i think) before install, and uninstalled 1.34 and cleaned up files from it before installing. |

I'm not sure if it was suggested in this thread, or the other one that was discussing these Vista problems, but did you ever try installing and running CMUD when in "safe" mode. Safe mode should disable most of the other software running on your computer that might be interfering with the copy protection. I'll also update the copy protection in the 2.0 version of CMUD to see if that helps.

I've been running cmud for quite some time and today when I started it up I am experiencing the exact same problem as Sneak.
I tried all of the steps. I'm running Vista Ultimate, installed myself (not on a dell or anything like that).
As I said, it had been working perfectly find for many months now. I tried uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, searching and destroying all files related to (backed up my char files of course).. cleaned out the registry but to no avail. |

So what changed on your computer between the time it was working and today? Did you install any Vista updates or any other software updates? Any updates to your anti-virus or anti-spyware software? What other software is running in the background that might be stopping CMUD from running?
I think we have narrowed this problem down to some other program that is interfering with the CMUD Armadillo copy protection system, so maybe some virus checker vendor has screwed something up in their updates, or something like that? |

Did you ever get yours to work? I'm still CMUD-less and frustrated. Been using Portal for about 3 weeks now and still loathe it. Not to mention their customer service flat out blows. They won't respond to ANY question, even prior to downloading it, unless you pay to register.
Is why I keep checking abck here, hoping for a solution. The cust. service has always been amazing and the product is the best out there. And trust me, I know this for a fact after trying numerous clients after losing first my beloved ZMUD and now unable to use CMUD either. There is nothingr emotely close and I miss it.

Please answer the questions that I have given here. As I said, I think it is related to virus checkers or network security programs, so you need to tell me what other software you have running in the background on your computer. The more people who answer these questions, the better chance we have to pin down the problem. |

Oh. Mine is the other CMUD post in this forum. Is from mid July I believe. I tried everything you and others suggested. Nothing worked so just thanked you all (As I really do appreciate all of you trying! :) ) and left quietly. Just thought to check back today to see if anyone else had had any luck and if so, what they tried or did to get it up and running.

I will try this when I get home tonight. And that *might* be it. Just a guess though because when I transferred everything from old Dell with XP to new Dell with Vista, ZMUD actually worked for 2 days. No problems at all. Then Vista suggested I dl and install some updates. Which I allowed and after a reboot ZMUD was dead. I tried everything, removing and reinstalling ZMUD, downloading a newer version of Zmud (I had a older, less gadget-y version *grin*), etc.. nothing worked. Which is when I came here, found out about CMUD and tried that instead and ran into the "stopped working" error issue.

OK, I have some new information that might help with these Vista problems.
I think the problem is with something in Vista called DEP (Data Execution Prevention). It appears that DEP is being enabled by default on new Vista machines, and it might be getting turned on by a new Vista patch.
To see if DEP is enabled on your Vista system:
1) Press Win+R to open the Run dialog box.
2) Type "SystemPropertiesDataExecutionPrevention" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
3) Click Continue, if prompted by User Account Control.
4) Under Performance, click Settings.
5) In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Data Execution Prevention tab. If your processor supports this feature, a sentence to that effect appears in the lower part of the dialog box.
You can turn off DEP for user applications by selecting the option "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only". Then click OK and close all of the dialog windows. Then you MUST REBOOT for this change to take effect.
After turning off DEP and rebooting, then try running CMUD to see if it works.
If CMUD works and you don't want to leave DEP turned off, you can go back into the DEP dialog and select the option: "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" and then click the Add button and add the CMUD.EXE program to the list of exceptions (and make sure there the checkbox next to CMUD.EXE gets checked). You'll again need to click OK and again need to Reboot to save the changes.
Please let me know if this helps. The new version of Armadillo seems to be full of bugs, so I am *not* going to upgrade the Armadillo in the 2.0 version of CMUD. I need to wait until they fix their bugs before I'll change the copy protection. But this DEP issue seems to be causing the same crash in other Armadillo applications, and it only happens on Vista systems with DEP enabled, which is currently the minority, but it slowly increasing.
Btw, apparently the latest update to Windows Server 2003 also enables DEP, so this same problem might be occuring on non-Vista systems with DEP enabled. |

Zugg, you've hit the nail on the head.
I completely forgot but about a week ago I turned it onto the other setting with an exception to stop getting an error message (related to divx file previews crashing a service).
My Mudding is more important than a minor annoyance however!
Edit: Quick follow up. It also works if I just add 'c:\program files\cmud\cmud.exe" to the list of services on that page. |

It worked!! Thank you, thank you!!
Will my old license key for ZMUD work in CMUD?
Breaks my heart that I finally admitted defeat and removed all traces of Zmud last week, along with 5 years of settings for the 3 muds I play. :( Was hundreds of aliases, house and people hilites, passwords for within the game, function keys for long quest commands. Ah well, is worth the days of redoing them all just to have my beloved client back finally! :)
Am so happy to be able to kill Portal now! Thanks again, so very much!
One last question.. in ZMUD ctrl l cleared my screen. I think. I know was ctrl something. My brain is saying l. That brought up something different in CMUD. Is there a quick ctrl option to clear my screen still?

You can't use your zMUD license with CMUD. CMUD is an all new product from Zuggsoft but trust me, it's well worth it.
As for clearing the screen the clear window hotkey is Ctrl-J. |

The #clr command does it as well.
Depending on how long ago you deleted your files and how much you've written to the drive in the meantime, it's possible that they still exist on the disc. Google "undelete" and you'll find a whole host of utilities that'll help you undelete files. The only trouble is, if it was a week ago you've probably overwritten it by now :(
Also, maybe the post above should be stickied in the CMUD and zMUD forums? |

Since it has been quoted here I will be splitting off Zugg's post and doing some sticky work with it. Take a few minutes to make sure I got it all set right.

Thanks!
I was able to find a set of settings for one of the muds. And since it was the mud I've played longest and the most I was pretty happy. It's an older version but some minor tweaking will fix it right up and beats re-doing hundreds of them from scratch. :)
I was able to bring it in to CMUD as a package, but not into the mud I wanted (Don't ask. :P ). It actually saved the file as a new mud with it's own icon. How do I move that package to a different mud I've already set up in CMUD? I have no doubt it's simple but given my level of cluelessness, even simple is usually tricky when it comes to computer stuff like this. *grin*

When you open CMUD right click and choose to edit the session you want to ADD the package to. Click on the Package File tab then click the green '+' (plus) sign. This will let you browse to other packages that you want to add to that session.
When you are done save your changes. When you open your session and go to the Package Editor you will see a new tab there representing the package you added. |
