Frozen Automapper |
I click on the map button, it docks to the right of the MUD, so far so good. Then I click reconfig or configure and instant frozen window that beeps when I click anywhere.

Oh, this is in version 1.25, that may help.

I cannot reproduce this. When I click config or reconfig, I get a dialog box with fields to enter a direction, and buttons like Next. I click Next and it sends the Look command to the MUD and then displays 3 checkboxes. Working fine here, so I'm not sure what to suggest.

Every once in a while, both in 1.24 and 1.25, when I'm wandering around playing with my map (I've been editing), the whole thing just freezes up. I've been trying to figure out an exact reason, but I've been unable to. Details: The direction goes into the queue (I see it in the bottom right-hand corner of the mapper window). My position on the map does *not* change, and the direction remains in the queue. If I do nothing else at all with the map, I can keep walking around. If I do #nodir, right click on the map to click "set current position," do #step, *anything* of the like, cMud completely freezes and needs to be shut down.
Again, wish I could give you more information on why, I didn't report it in the last thread because I was still trying to figure out what exactly was triggering it. It seems to go in spurts-- sometimes it'll crash 3x in a row, and then I can go 30+ minutes without another problem. |

Hmm, that's when it's in a seperate window or docked next to the main game window? I'll try once more, then re-install if it freezes and see if that affects it.

I believe the window is appearing behind the CMUD window not in front of it so it is unreachable. The MUD output continues to scroll, but I can't see the config window or access it.

As another update-- I managed to freeze it just by clicking on the "edit map" button when it had been in the other state (I had been swapping back and forth somewhat frequently as I walked around mapping).

Caelin, you need to create your own post for this. Your problem is different from what Fizban reported. I know it sounds similar, but it sounds like you are having more major problems with your setup if CMUD is freezing in all of those different places. You need to delete your CMUD files and start with a fresh installation. Post to a new thread if you still have troubles. But I cannot reproduce any of your freezing problems.
As mentioned above, my guess is that you are getting an error window popping up that is hidden behind the main CMUD window. It might be a problem script that you have running in the background.
Back to this topic: Fizban, try minimizing the windows to see if there is an error window displaying somewhere. I am modifying 1.25 so that the mapper Config window is a "stay on top" window to see if that will force it to the top. If you can't minimize the windows, try Alt-Tab to another app and then Alt-Tab back to CMUD to see if Windows puts the correct window on top. |

I'll give it a shot tomorrow-- been wrestling with it for a while today and can't do a whole lot more atm.
I don't think it's an error window popping up in the background that I can't get to-- generally those are the "if you click the screen, it beeps" issue, right? The program itself is still operating, you'd see text going by as people said things, you just couldn't do anything until you click the error.
My issue is a complete and total lock, which just ends the process completely. If you'd like me to send you the .pkg tomorrow after I reinstall and if I'm still having the issues, let me know. (I will start a new thread about it should that be the case). |

Caelin: that's why I think you need to do a clean install and start fresh. It sounds like something is seriously corrupted on your system or in your package files.

Fizban: Download the new version of 1.25 and see if the mapper Config window stays on top where you can use it now.

Hmm, never mind, I searched for CMUD and deleted everything, then downloaded, worked that time.

It's still doing it, I'm going to try making the window smaller when I click config so it doesn't take up the whole screen.

Maybe you can post more details about your screen layout. Windows has some bugs regarding multiple stay-on-top windows, so maybe it's because of how your window is set up. Is your main CMUD window maximized? I'm not going to be able to work on this particular problem any more tonight, so hopefully you can figure out how to view the config window on your system.

Btw, CMUD might just be remembering your Configuration window's last position and setting. Try deleting your CMUD.INI file to reset that and then try it again and see if the config window displays on top then. Just an idea that might help.

Now that I wiped out cMud and reinstalled, I'm getting the exact same issue as Fizban. I minimized both the map and the main cMud window to be as tiny as possible, then clicked the "edit" button. Since my old settings went, it tries to pop open the map configure file. However... it's not appearing on the screen at *all* (even with everything else minimized, so I'm essentially seeing my desktop and two tiny squares-- I undocked the mapper to see if that made it better. It didn't.)

Well, one problem from this is that it says you only have 256 MB of memory. You should have at least 512 MB of memory to run Windows XP properly. My guess is that Windows is running out of memory and cannot allocate the window somehow. But as you can see, the crash is coming from the Windows CreateWindowExA routine, which is something in the Windows USER32.DLL API that I don't have any control over. So, not sure what to suggest except if you really only have 256 MB, then you really need to go buy more memory. Windows will run a *LOT* faster with 512 MB of ram, and ram is pretty cheap these days.
My guess is that this failed in 1.25 because the Configuration window was modified to use the themed controls like the rest of CMUD uses, and this might have made the window take up more memory than it did in 1.24.
You might also try shutting down any other programs that are running at the same time if your memory is that limited. |

Wouldn't that mean RAM's not the issue? |

OK, I decided to give this bug a try. If I use my map undocked it doesn't lock up, but If I dock my map to the right side of the screen and THEN reconfigure it beeps at me when I try to click anywhere. Also It hides the configuration screen. There is no way to view the window. It is on the ALT tab list I can see it there, I have an xp power toy that lets me see alt tab windows, but I cannot bring it to the front. If I type c the window closes and I get my mouse back ect.
I have a gig of ram. I know my computer used to tell you I had like 128megs on the crash dump but I always had a gig. When I started installing cmud to program files it started reporting the proper amount of memory in the crash dumps.
edit: I have a dual monitor system and I keep my mapper undocked and on the second screen most of the time. When I am undocked and on the secondary screen all is well with the world.
edit 2: If I place the undocked mapper on screen 1 with my main session it does the same as mentioned above. Main Cmud window maximized or smaller and not touching the mapper doesn't matter at all.
BUT, If I place both the main CMud window and the mapper on screen 2 EVERYTHINING works, Docked or Undocked ect. |

OK, I may have found the problem. I think it is opening the Config window on the second monitor. I have my secondary monitor to the *left* of my main monitor, and it seemed to be displaying the config window there. The same was true of the Find Room window I think.
I have changed it so that it should display the window on the correct monitor now. So, download 1.25 *again* and give it another try.
Arminas: is your secondary monitor to the right of your main monitor by any chance? That would explain why you don't see it either.
I always forget that Delphi defaults to opening windows in their *designed* position. So unless I specifically save/load the window position from the INI file, my routine to fix the window onto the proper monitor doesn't get run. And when I checked, neither the Config window nor the Find Room window were calling the routines to save/load the window position. So hopefully that will fix it. |

Btw Fizban, the 18.96 allocated memory isn't a true representation of the amount of memory being used. With only 256 MB you *will* have memory troubles. You'll likely get all sorts of wierd problems that can't be reproduced. And your computer will be running very slowly because it will be thrashing to disk trying to use the disk as virtual memory.
Trust me, you really need to add more memory to your computer. As I said, it's really cheap to get either another 256 or just a single 512MB card, and your Windows performance will skyrocket. It will really be like having a whole new computer. |
