Anyone know how programs are *supposed* to install? |

.pkg files ;)
Since the option's already in in 1.17 and that's what happens when you pick it, looks like it's so :D |

"Junctions" are like symbolic links in *nix. They were actually introduced in W2K (well NTFS 5.0 to be precise), but were renamed to "Junction Points", from whatever they were orginally called, in WinXP. However, there were barely documented at all even in XP (and 2K3 I think) - there are some articles just a few months old about them complaining about the lack of documentation. They are a pretty nice feature though (although there were some quirks - maybe they have been fixed for Vista).

It looks like "C:\Users\Whatever\Saved Games" might be the new "standard" folder for game files in Vista, or did you create that folder yourself Guinn?
Personally I'm still pretty against the whole "My xxx" syntax (because it's retarded and difficult to quickly navigate). A lot of games just put things directly in the documents directory, eg I'm pretty sure GTA just saved it "My Documents/Grand Theft Auto <SubName> Saved Games" ... Need for Speed, Tomb Raider, and many others are similar... so I think Civ 4 using "My Documents/My Games" is more the exception than the rule.
Also, I'm still not sold on using "MUDs" vs "CMUD". The standard seems to be using the game name, not genre... eg we see "My Documents/Need For Speed Underground" rather than "My Documents/Races" |

I don't think there's any kind of standard when it comes to that, Rainchild. I've owned programs that do both and neither.

What you see on the screenshots was all made by Vista. Saved games looks like it could be a good place for it. So we'd have
"C:\Users\Whatever\Saved Games\CMUD"
I'd prefer CMUD to Muds too, since the common way is the game/program name rather than the type |

I don't think "Saved Games" is the right folder. "Saved Games" to me implies saved progress in a game, not a set of layout/script files, which is what CMUD's creating. I'd prefer there to be either a \CMUD\MUDs or just a \MUDs\ directory in \Users\Username. MUD files are something totally different to Saved Games and don't really fit in any of the catagories there, so I'd suggest them having their own.

Personally I'd prefer to navigate a layer deeper for things where I don't have to navigate too much. If there are too many subfolders in a folder, the folder becomes slower to use, load and find things in. However too much depth is bad too.
I like the re-arrangement that has been done for Vista. Pictures, Music and Games are not Documents, so why should they be in My Documents? It makes people _think_ all they need to backup are My Documents. If they just do this, they will lose a lot of things if they actually need to use that backup. |

The trick is finding something that will work on both XP and Vista, and so far "Documents" seems the best bet. "Saved Games" doesn't exist in XP, and I don't want to make the installer try to determine which version of Windows you are using...I'd like it to work the same for both.
I'll go with the consensus and change it from "MUDS" to "CMUD".
Also, on my gaming system downstairs, I probably have 5 or 6 games in the Documents/My Games folder. GTA is in /Documents, along with another game that uses /Documents/CompanyName/GameName. So yeah, there isn't any standard. But Documents/My Games/GameName seems to have the most support, and it seems to be from newer games, so maybe this is their solution to the XP vs Vista thing too. |

Yes, I prefer "Games" or "My Games" to "Saved Games", as "Saved Games" is too specific. For example, CMUD could come under "Games", but as Fang Xianfu said, it doesn't have "Saved Games" as such. I don't think Vista chose a good name for that folder.

Let's not get too hung up on it. CMUD is odd in that it's not a game, more than a normal client (half client, half IDE), and kinda involves some sort of saved game features, but you don't want to hide the settings away like you would with Office or IE... so it doesn't fall into something I'd expect an OS to anticipate.
Documents seems like the best idea since it's not hidden and will work with XP and Vista. I'll move it to Saved Games personally, but as long as Zugg gives us the option to pick a location I'm happy ;) |
