[3.22 pro]Namechange alters window docked setting |
I don't know for sure if this is really a bug or not, but I thought it interesting:
1)create a series of windows with simple names (I used the letters a-n, all windows originally created in main package)
2)dock/arrange windows as desired (I mimicked the layout mentioned in the 14-windows post)
1 window docked to bottom of screen
3 windows docked in vertically-tiled fashion to the right of main window
2 windows docked in vertically-tiled fashion to the top of main window
2 windows docked in horizontally-tiled fashion to the top of a floating window
4 singular floating windows
1 floating map window
1 floating db module window
3)create a new package (I named it Lusternia Map to mimic the package used in the 14-windows session)
4)move the Window objects for the 3 windows docked to the right of the main window to the new package
5)via the Package Editor, rename one of the windows in the new package
The newly-renamed window left the right-of-main-window dock position it was in and returned to the rest-of-session tab list that windows are originally created in. |

Yes, I think this makes sense given what the code is doing. Renaming the window creates a new unique ID (UID) which is the basis for how the docking system keeps track of windows. This causes the initial docking location specified in the window settings to reset the docking position. Not sure this is fixable given how the docking system uses the UID.

Why change the GUID? Isn't the window name just for human consumption anyway? A rose by any other name, etc.

Because when you change a window, CMUD assumes that you want this to be a "new" window and not attached to the previous window. For example, if you have a window in a shared package it might be used by other session layouts. Renaming the window creates a new GUID so that it is treated as a different window. If you just want to change the text shown on the window tab without creating a new GUID then you can set the Caption field for the window.
