Possible solution for "Class Not Registered" error

A zMUD user who was getting the "Class Not Registered" error when they started zMUD found a fairly easy procedure that helped him resolve this problem. Here is what he send to me:

This is in reference to the “class not registered” problem that can occur when zMud starts. I was able to fix the problem on my computer without having to reinstall the OS. In fact, it was quite easy and only took a few minutes.

My computer is running Windows XP SP2. I followed the instructions at http://www.zuggsoft.com/data, but was unable to install MDAC 2.8 because of SP2. When I ran the MDAC Component Checker, I chose the “Perform analysis against a selected version” option and selected “MDAC 2.8 RTM”. I went to the “File Details” > “Mismatch” view and noticed that while several files had a version higher than what CC was looking for, many others had a lower version. I followed the path indicated by the tool, and moved the dll’s that had a lower version number to a backup folder. Windows File Protection almost immediately replaced these missing dll’s with a more up-to-date version. Then, I was able to successfully run zMud.

I hope this helps some other people.

I also hope this helps others. It's certainly easier than editing the registry or reinstalling Windows.
