This has become one of the most common problems encountered here recently. The problem is most prevalent on Windows XP systems, but can occur on any system in which the LicCtrl service has been stopped or disabled.

This problem typically is diagnosed by zMud starting, a background activity cursor being displayed then zMud stops. If the splash screen appears or you get a licensing dialog this is not the problem.

The LicCtrl service is part of the eLicense Copy Protection scheme that Zuggsoft employs within its products. When this service is not running, the eLicense wrapper is unable to extract and execute the program.

To restart the LicCtrl service, one must goto the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

The following procedure should work on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 and most likely any forthcoming versions of Microsoft Windows.
Note: This will not work on Windows 95, Windows 98/SE, or Windows ME.

There are two ways to do this. The quick way, or the more standard way. First I will show you the more standard way.
1. Open your Control Panel.
2. Open Administrative Tools.
3. Open Services.

Now, the quick way.

1. Open the Run Dialog (WINDOWS-KEY+R or Start Menu -> Run)
2. Type Services.msc and press Enter or Click OK.

Once you have opened the Services Management Console, scroll down until you have found the LicCtrl service. Right-click on LicCtrl and select properties. Under Startup Type, select Automatic from the pulldown menu. You will now need to click the Start button directly under the Service Status.

Or... these two commands will set the service to automatically start on reboot and then start the service without requiring one to open the Services MMC:

reg add HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServicesLicCtrlService /v Start /t REG_DWORD /v 2 /f

net start "LicCtrl Service"

If you find that the service is already started and running, you should stop the service then start it again. This forces the service to reload its data and seems to have a better effect then rebooting. Also it is faster.
