MDAC Update Broke zMUD? |
I'm using zMUD 7.21 on a computer running Win98 SE. Today Microsoft released a security update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 - after doing the update, I can no longer open the mapper. Attempting to open the mapper results in an access violation at address 0059EB9C in module ZMUD.EXE; Read of Address FFFFFFFF. Once I've gotten this message, I can't do anything with the program including close it. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

This has happened before with Microsoft. The only solution is to either try and restore a previous version of MDAC (which can be *very* difficult), or wait until Microsoft "fixes their fix". Microsoft has a really bad history with screwing up MDAC updates, and it's sad to see this trend continued. Makes me even more determined to get rid of MDAC in CMUD. Sorry there isn't anything I can do about it myself.
Although I'd certainly like to hear from other people to determine if this is a general problem, or only a problem with certain systems. |

Just wanted to say that I'm experiencing exactly the same issue as jpolen2. I'm also using Win98SE and have downloaded the MDAC 2.8 security update from the Windows Update site. In addition to the problem with the mapper not working and not being able to close ZMud windows without ctrl-alt-deleting, ZMud also reports that the layout.rpg file is corrupt - although this is overcome by overwriting the layout.rpg file in question.

Further to my post above, I THINK I've managed to fix the situation by "downgrading" MDAC from the security update to version 2.8.
I used the MDAC Component Checker available here and selected "Perform Analysis against selected version (MDAC version 2.8 RTM)". I then removed the mismatched .DLLs as reported by the Component Checker (after backing them up, of course ) and re-ran the MDAC 2.8 installer link here to reinstall the previous versions of those .DLLs.
So far, all seems well, ZMud is working perfectly again (touch wood!). Of course, this does mean that the MDAC critical update has effectively been removed, and your PC may as a result be vulnerable |

Yeah, I was finally able to use the add/remove programs dialogue to remove the patch I'd applied. This left things kind of messy, but I was able to download the MDAC SP1 and was able to install it over the corrupted files. Of course Mickey Soft's authentication applet crashed my computer a few times, but I ultimately got the file, zMUD's working again and I'm a happy camper.
