Question concerning Zchat. |
First off, zmud is GREAT, and zchat is an amazing plugin.
That being said, here is my problem.
I have two pc's networked together through a wireless router, and one IP add. for my connection. My router creates internal IP's for my pc's, and my ISP will only provide me with the single IP.
Due to having the internal IP addresses, I can connect OUT easily in zchat, but nobody can connect IN to me. (e.g: I can connect easily to my brother, but if he sends connection to me it fails.)
This wouldn't be a big issue, except several of my friends are on networks similar to mine.. single shared IP from ISP, and internal IP's on their machines. So they too can connect OUT to anybody, but any chat connections sent TO them fails. Is there any way to get around this? None of us have firewalls installed, but the IP problem is acting like a firewall anyway :P.
E.G:
My ISP IP is 111.111.11.1
My internal IP is 222.222.22.2
Friends IP is 333.333.33.3
Friends interal ip444.444.44.4
I try to connect to either of his IP's and fail (333.. is a file server running windows internet connection sharing, 444.. is his PC with zchat running)
I am running zchat on my connection (222...., through a wireless router 111.111)
If anybody has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate some help! Thank you!

well, this isn't exactly my field, but i'll share one experience i had with you. my home lan is set up similarly, 1 router and 3 pc's with lan addresses. for a while i hosted a mud from home, and to get people to connect, i gave them the 1 ip address for home (the one the isp assigned), and configured my linksys router to send port 4000 connection requests to the computer that was hosting.
when configuring my router, there was a panel for "port forwarding" i just put in the port i wanted forwarded, and what machine to send it to.
if you can find out what port zchat connects onto, you might be able to do the same thing.
also, there might be a way to expose one of your computers completely to the internet, so the router will send all requests of any port to that computer.
Try reading the documentation that came with the router, and looking for ways to configure it. |

zChat is using tcp port 4050, so you need to port-forward all requests on tcp port 4050 on the router to your PC which is running zChat. Most routers should be able to do this.
(Ad: 'Active Ports' available from 32bit.bhs.com is good for finding out what is using which port on your windows PC)

PS btw, is there any way to change the default port that zchat uses? |

Yeah, port forwarding is something I read about and definately considered, but I am by no means a computer guru, and couldn't find the option my router settings.. soo, I tried the next best thing.
I'm using Dell Truemobile 1184 Wireless BB router. I called Dell support to ask them but.. well, they didn't seem to speak English (and I'm not talking they used advanced tech terms I don't understand.. I mean they didn't speak English!)
Will research some more into the router and see if I can find port forwarding options. Thanks for the replies!

Ok. With model and make in hand we are in business. Here is how you setup the port forwarding:
# Locate the MAC address:
* Windows 98 and Millennium (Me),
1. Click Start > Run
2. Type winipcfg, and click OK.
3. Write down the MAC (Adapter) address of your computer to configure for gaming.
* Windows XP and 2000
1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type cmd, and click OK.
3. On the command prompt, type ipconfig /all
4. Write down the MAC (Physical) address of your computer to configure for gaming.
# Open the web browser, and type http://my.router (or http://192.168.2.1)
# Click the Advanced Settings tab.
# Click the DHCP Server Settings tab on the left navigation bar.
# Under IP Address Reservation,
1. Enter the MAC address of the system or systems you wish to use for gaming in Computer MAC field.
2. Enter an IP address for the system (select a number between 101 and 254)
# Click Submit.
Click the Port Forwarding Settings tab on the left navigation bar.
#you want to set a custom Port Forwarding Setting
#In the Internal IP address field, enter the IP address of the client computer on which this application runs.
#In the Protocol field, select TCP.
#In the Port Numbers field, enter a port number or a range of ports. (4050)
For example, if you want to use zchat, on a computer with an IP address of 192.168.2.3, enter 3 for the Internal IP address, select TCP, and enter "4050" for the Port Numbers.
Click the SUBMIT button to store the changes.
You will have to tell your friends to put your external IP address in their zchat...the one that your ISP has given you.

Thanks TC! The information you provided was a liiiiiitle off (perhaps they have changed they interface of the Truemobile, or you are referring to an upgraded version?), as my router options do not include some of the tabs you mentioned (for example, port forwarding :P).
However, the information you gave was enough to lead me down the right path, and the end result is what counts.. appreciate it, thanks for the info all!
