I'm really looking forward to seeing what people can create for SWG...I'm certainly anxiously awaiting the release also!
There are two phases to map creation: The first phase involves setting up the initial map database; adding zones (planets), defining the different location "categories" (like town, dungeon, etc) and creating icons for each category, creating the background images for each zone, etc.
This first phase of creation is done by zMapper and only needs to be done once. Eventually I'll probably have a server set up to host this database, but not until late March at the earliest due to other projects. So, if other people want to use zMapper themselves to create this initial database, feel free.
The second phase of map creation is where players explorer the game world and add locations to the map database. This is done using zExplorer and is done by everyone playing the game who has access to the map database that was created in phase one.
So, zMapper is something that only a few "advanced" players need in order to create the original map structure. Then zExplorer is what all of the other players use to contribute their exploration knowledge.
Hope this clears things up a bit.
Btw, I should have a "bundle" purchase for both zMapper and zExplorer soon that will give you a discount if you need to buy both programs. Stay tuned.
