ZMud slowness, maybe connection?

I run ZMud off an 800mhz, 128ram AMD-based computer, over a DSL line I have tested to be 512 kbps down, 128 kbps upload. When I use ZMud (a program I love now, btw) to connect to my favorite MUD, I am getting a 3-5 second delay before my command is sent to the MUD (Achaea, to be exact). Achaea has a native java client, and when i run the two side by side, the java client executes a command in a second, compared to 6 or 7 seconds for ZMud. I know I have to be doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what. It is all run behind a Siemens Speedstream 2602 Router/Hub, that says it has a firewall, but does not say anywhere in the documentation Socks or Proxy. I really like ZMud, but will have to abandon it if this can't be resolved. Triggers are great, but they do me no good if someone can pull off 7 or 8 moves in the java client before my one is even sent. This very frustrating, as I am almost positive it isn't lag, since i have checked against the java client at several different times of day, and I still receive information from the MUD (so and so comes in, so and so leaves, so and so giggles at you as you anxiously await your first command to go through ZMUD and be executed by the MUD). Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to say that I firmly believe this is a problem on my part, certainly it can't be inherent to ZMud, considering how well coded and well-supported the software is. This forum has been great as well, I never expected to get any responses to my first question (Achaean newbie seeks auoheal). I should note I had the problem when i first downloaded ZMud's public version, then it went away when i downloaded the beta (at least until now:)

If it's a firewall, you'll need to figure out how to tweak it or simply disable it altogether (not a good idea, but it will definitely speed ZMud up or at least rule out that your firewall is causing the slowdown).

Might also want to try updating your network card's drivers. Maybe it isn't really the problem, but it never hurts to try.

try disabling all your scripts, spam filter etc, try a different mud with the same settings and script...will be easy to track down the problem if it happens on all muds or with a specific script

Why oh WHY did I have pass door on...

Okay, tried some of the things suggested here, with no perceivable success. I used MudMaster 2000, and it tells me what port it sets up the server on. Can anyone tell me what port ZMud opens to connect to the remote port? I can manually open ports onmy firewall, just need to know which one. MdMaster runs fast, but it is nothing compared to ZMud, functionality wise. I also find, that ZMud ran faster than MM when ZMud was running fast (if that makes sense). Thank you so far for your help. I have determined it is definitely ZMud though, and not the Achaea site.

Ok, got it running lightning fast again, but unfortunately can't tell you quite how. Being the impatient non-professional that I am (I know you should implement one thing at a time to accurately gauge it), I restarted my router(didn't show an improvement), took down the firewall and restarted my router (improved MM, no improvement ZMUD), took out a registry setting I got from John Navas DSL tweak (restarted and showed an improvement in download speed), redownloaded ZMUD beta after uninstalling it. Now ZMud is back to the speed I expected. I think it was the registry setting, but can't be sure. Anywho, its working now, and thanks to everyone who helped me so far.
