Simple answer - upgrade!

The freeware version of ZMud is an old, buggy copy. The latest releases have the most bug fixes and the most stable coding.

I use the freeware version at work, and have noticed that I can't run it directly from the .exe file, I had to create a shortcut, and run it from the shortcut. I think otherwise it's not always running in the correct directory, and can't find the settings files.
