Seems like when a up or down link connect to another zone, the name of the zone it connects to is no longer shown. This probably happens with "other" links that connect to another zone too, but I don't have any of those in my map to test.

That has always been true as far as I can remember. The name of the zone is only drawn for regular links.
Now that I have the mouse-over text, I might be able to at least put the name of the zone there.

Nope, I just tested with 1.04 and pre 1.10 versions did show the name of the area in up and down exits. I guess the same functionaility can be emulated by adding some labels, though.
