Because Map mode is for creating new rooms, and zMUD has no way of knowing that a door exists before the room is created. Follow mode is used for whenever you are not creating new rooms and you want the mapper to just follow you through the existing rooms. Also, you should not walk around your MUD in map mode, it can mess up your map pretty badly if something goes wrong when walking around.
