Use of %selected as a variable

Hello. I want to use %selected as a variable in an alias. I select the text, then enter the alias and it works fine. What I'm wondering though...is there a command or method of some kind whereby I could actually "deselect"? I want to use the selection once, but deselect it afterward to prevent that selection from being picked up again.

Hope that makes sense!

I don't know of a command but there's an easy method for "deselecting". Just place your mouse anywhere in the text portion of the screen and left-click.
