Beta forum?

How do I get in? I've only been granted access for it like 4 times now... is all this security really neccessary? Now I can't even find a link to get in.

What say, zugg? why don't you just open it up?

You get in by filling the Application Form that appears in the All Forums page. You then get access and you should be able to get to the Beta Forum. The Beta Forum also appears in the All Forums page and you can also see it in the drop down menu when you put your mouse over the Forums button at the top.

The reason to have to get permission to access the beta forum is because in here is where you will find the link to download the latest beta version and Zugg wants to make sure that people agree to the fact that beta version may be unstable and have very serious bugs in them. If everybody could download the beta version with no warning whatsoever, there would be a lot of questions and e-mails send to Zugg asking for help with problems that develop from using the beta version. This support takes time and doesn't let Zugg devote much time to coding.

I suspect the problem with having to be authorized many different times has to do with losing your cookie from the forums or forgetting your password and creating a new login (doesn't seem as likely).

To the best of my knowledge nobody has ever had their beta forum permission revoked, and as long as I've been here, it's never forgotten who I am, such that re-logging in doesn't fix it.

Have you tried the Logout/Login button at the top of the forum when you find you no longer have access? After doing that, re-load the All Forums page and see if your ability to reach the Beta Forum has been restored.

It's a cookie thing? Well that explains it. From time to time, I go in and thrash my cookies cuz ya know, each of those things that are 10 characters long actually take up 4 kb on your disk... and with all those freakin' cookies out on the net, that adds up. And since I am broke, I gotta do what I can to conserve space. But fortunately, I didn't have to wait on an email this time.

Each cookie only takes about 1K for me. I'm sure they are all less than 1K, but since Windows won't display me sizes less than 1K with cookies, I'll assume they are all 1K. Adding them all up, I have about 100K in all. That's less than about five typical Word documents for me or three pictures saved in Temporary Internet Files from viewing some webpage. But hey, don't mind me, I'm just rambling.

While the size of the file may actually be only 1 kilobyte, a cluster on a disk cannot contain more than one file. Under every 32bit operating system that I am aware of, the cluster size used on more large-capacity drives in 4kb. Therefore, no file can occupy less space than this, even if the size is smaller. That's a lot of wasted space and it definitely adds up.

Next time you erase a small text file, pay close attention to the amount of free space you have after you delete it.

Just trivia...

Yes, but there are some beta versions that never make it into the Downloads page or the AutoUpgrade feauture in zMUD. These are the earliest betas and have the most bugs. After a few more versions, Zugg then decides to let the general public download the latest beta version because he needs more people to find all of the bugs. However, people are still adviced that if they don't like the risks involved, to not download the beta version.
