mapper

I play 2 charracters on Realms of Despair and have mapped quite a bit of it using my first charracter and I am wondering how I can use the same map for my other charracter. I tried to export the master map and the zone maps but they come up empty. Is there a way I can share the maps between the 2 charracters and if so if I create more of the map on the one charracter that is borrowing the original map will the new room show up when I use the map with the original charracter. I looked in the help files and in this forum but couldn't find anything that might help me. I hope I didn't make this too confusing. Thanks for your help.

Exporting and importing is not necessary. Logon as your second character and open the map. In the Map window, under the File menu, select Open Master Map. Navigate your way to the zMUD folder and select the appropriate .zzz file. It's probably named something like RealmsofDespair.zzz.

Ok I opened the master map and it was labeled realmsofdespair.zzz and the maps were empty. It had all my zones but they were empty also. If I delete the maps from my second charracter and start over with trying to get the maps will I delete the maps of the original charracter? I have another question about docking the windows. How do I dock my mapper window like it shows on your web page about zmud? I appreciate all your help and am trying to be as specific as I can, if you need any further info just ask. Thanks again.

I'd just like to clarify that the above only works if the characters settings files, and the master map file share the same directory. Say you had two characters: Alphie and Betty. Your RealmsofDespair directory should look something like this:

-zMUD
|-RealmsofDespair
|- DB folder (contains database files)
|- Maps folder (contains area maps)
|- Sounds folder
|- .zfg (config file)
|- _bak.zfg
|- Alphie.mud (settings file for Alphie)
|- Alphie_bak.mud
|- Betty.mud (settings file for Betty)
|- Betty_bak.mud
|- RealmsofDespair.mud (inherited settings file -- optional)
|- RealmsofDespair_bak.mud
|- RealmsofDespair.zzz (master map file)
|- RealmsofDespair_bak.zzz

My point is that in order to share mapping, database, and sound files between different characters on the same MUD, they must share the same directory.

Thank you that helped alot. These two characters are not sharing the same directory. How do I go about getting them in the same directory? Can I just use explorer and move Bettie to Alfies' directory or do I need to reset up Betties' character?

Nadden

p.s. I went back to look at the directory and your reply and I don't see either of my charrectors names there. Of the files that you listed as should be there only the ones without a charracter name are there. Did I do something wrong when I created the charectors? I used the charector creater when I created them.

The one he flagged with inheritted settings file is just a abetter way of doing things. It is not required. I would actually suggest that you not share map files unless you consistently recall immediately before disconnect. The reason for that sugestion is your chacters current location is stored in the map file. So you end either dealing with a recall before disconnect, or dealing with a #FIND after connect.

I would suggest that instead you copy the contents of the Map subdirectory from char A to char B. That contains your actual maps. Then open char A's master map from within char B, as you did before, and save as in char B's folder. Yes the duplication eats up drive space, but until the next public version the problems I mentioned above with sharing a map will exist.
