Elicense = bleh |
I've been trying to get my license put on an install that's on a network, connected to the internet via Micro$oft Proxy Server. Apparently Elicense doesn't have an answer as to how to make this work (their suggestion was to disable the proxy client and see if that works hahaha do they have a clue? That's like telling someone on dial-up to pull out their modem and see if they can connect).
Well I can see a long dramatic work-around coming if I want to make this work on this machine. I know you guys don't have the techno-advice for Elicense, but you guys should know that your licensing vendor doesn't have the savvy to support an extremely obscure product like M$ Proxy. |

There's more story to this than it seems you're aware of. Elicense used to work with proxy servers, but some clever pirates figured out that you could tell eLicense to search for the internet through a proxy, insert their own bogus server into the process, and fake registrations for free.
The only responsible thing for eLicense to do was to remove the proxy option, since their paying users would quickly lose money on their eLicense-protected products once the proxy exploit was well known.
Unfortunately, this affects honest users who are stuck behind proxies, but there's not currently a viable proxy work-through.

Maybe you guys should sell a CD version that only operates with the original CD in the drive for people like me. Or maybe that tech is too costly? I have no idea, only that I can no longer use the best MUD product ever made :(

If you can get it on a CD and try to make it so it will only run with the original CD, then there is always a way to copy all of the stuff that is on the CD to another CD or a file and have it run anyway. It is a lot harder to fool security when some steps are done remotely over the Internet than when you have the complete licensing scheme with you. I'm guessing that this wouldn't make it a viable solution.
But fear not, for there is a new, improved, version of eLicense hitting zMUD soon that should include support for proxies once more, but this time, reinforced, so none of those nasty hackers will use zMUD without paying.
