need help with STRANGE glitch!! |
i'm on zmud6.16 with windows95.
i've used it for a long time with no problems, but recently decided to start mapping. while mapping i started a Record Path... since then it's all went kablooey. at first i couldn't log on two characters and got a "Can't focus invisible or hidden window" message. so i used the Layout/Reset Windows/All Windows option from the menu.
to my surprise and consternation there was the Record Path window and ALSO a phantom input bar! the extra command line bar looks exactly like the one at the bottom of the zmud window with the scroll back triangle and parsing and trigger toggles! with some effort i can manage to move it about, but i can't close it or get any menu from it other than the copy&paste menu in the area you enter text in!
not only is that a problem, but i can't get rid of the Record Path window, either. if i click the X in the upper right corner, it appears to go away, but when i reset windows it's right back!!
if i click the 'Save Recording' button i get a big red circle with a white X window that says, verbatim, "Access violation at address 005A1E4F in module 'ZMUD.EXE'. Read of address FFFFFFFF."
likewise when i click the 'Cancel Recording' button i get the same window with this similar message, "Access violation at address 005A207E in module 'ZMUD.EXE'. Read of address FFFFFFFF."
i tried duplicating the whole folder and replacing ZMUD.EXE in it from a virgin copy and that complicated everything to no end, because it wasn't registered then.
i need some help on this, please, if there are any really bright minds out there, please, try to help me out with this glitch!
thanks! :) |

Try deleting the zmud.ini file and let zMUD recreate it.

thanks for responding!
i tried that, and it didn't work. the 2nd floating command line and the Record % (path) window are still there. :(
also, i'm not sure, but i think all the registration is gone, because i got a shareware splash screen at startup. double plus no good!
any more help or ideas that won't dig me deeper still into glitches?
thanks! :) |

And you have no other window open? Does there appear any other window name, besides your primary name, at the very end of the Windows menu?
Was your registration gone because of erasing your zmud.ini file? That shouldn't happen in 6.16

okey, i did change the circumstances, i upgraded to 6.26a in a duplicate folder in hopes that that would remove the glitch. it didn't. the 2nd command line and Record % both still show up when i reset all windows. and there are no other windows showing under the windows menu besides my logged character's window.
and the splash screen only showed up the first time i restarted zmud 6.26a.
it doesn't actually disallow me to log a 2nd character anymore, as it first did, when it would close the first character's window when i tried to log a new character. so i'm not sure it matters anymore. if i don't reset all windows, i don't notice any problems. if i do, i can close the Record % window with the upper right corner X (though i think it's still there somewhere), however i can't get rid of the floating command line as it seems to be Always On Top.
Also, now, i'm getting a message when i startup zumd 6.26a that says "Chars; Record Not Found."
thank you for you kind consideration and efforts at helping me resolve this, and i hope you will continue until i am able to.

Try deleting any *.lay files hanging around your zMUD folder.
Be sure to also uncheck the Use Layout box if it is marked in the Properties for your character in the character database.

well, no matter what, it's all still there; the disembodied, floating, second command input line, the Record % path dialogue box, and the Chars; Record not found message.
am i going to have to UNinstall everything (everything zmud) to get rid of these?? is/was it a bad mistake to always keep the previous version (installed) of zmud every time i upgraded to a new version??
argh!

No, it's not a mistake to install over a previous copy of zMUD. You should however always make a backup of your zMUD folder before upgrading.
Anyway, you may try a clean install to see if that helps. First, copy you settings file to somewhere else and now unistall zMUD. Delete any remaining files and the zMUD folder. Reinstall zMUD and see if the problem is gone. If the problem is gone, try putting your settings file back where it was, recreate your character, and have it use this settings file.

Zugg stated something about the Reset all windows menu command. It was something to the effect of: there are a few hidden windows that zmud uses, the reset put them into a visible location on the screen. Closing these windows can have odd side effects. I think that is what you are doing, instead either dont use the reset, or if you must just minimize all the odd windows that are suddenly visible.
