I've noticed that MSP has a hard time deciding when it is going to automatically download the sounds from the default URL...
I have checked and the autodownload box(and the % and play when finished boxes) are checked in preferences.
I also know that zMUD is receiving the sound code, because in preferences, under MSP Sounds, I see the sound's name listed. And to top it off, the download URL is correct(and it downloads the sound fine when I click the download button).
The sound I'm testing with is in-line if that makes any difference...
If you have no clue what I just said, it's because I suck at coherent writing :-P

I remember there being some kind of issue with this that I thought was a bug, and had to have explained by Zugg when he was working on MSP.
I think it was along the lines of 'zMUD won't play the sound the first time if it has to be downloaded (or first several times if it's still downloading) because the whole sound file isn't on the local system yet. But this is a 2 year old memory and I could be mistaken.
I'm not sure if any of the programming work done since then might have affected MSP.

I'm not sure on this one, but I think that you also can't make zMUD download a sound with inline MSP.

This I could see. Since in-line codes with auto-downloads can bring a lot of abuse(a shame, really).
Ahh well, it's not a big deal -- I was just playing with MSP and noticed it.
