is there a way to turn this off in a trigger? with #menu maybe? by editing a settings file, or something?

I can't think of any way to turn this off with a trigger, but you can turn it off using the Preferences/Connection dialog. With it turned off, you could then write your own autoreconnect script which could be controlled with triggers.

The one I did a long time ago was to add a variable like "IWantToQuit" then change the atconnect and atdisconnect alias. In atconnect you set IWantToQuit to 0 and in atdisconnect you check to see if it is 1 and then issue #DISCONNECT. Sounds weird but it worked back in 5.x something. I haven't tried it since.
