Control Mapper State

I have looked but not found a way to include controls for the mapper state in a button or trigger. Is there? For instance, I would like to have a button that does a few things, including turning the mapper off, then another state to turn it back on? any ideas?

You are looking for the #MENU command.

#menu {map|file|mapper off}
#menu {map|file|follow mode}

etc.

A simple toggle button with those commands will work for you.
